Job Description Summary:

Under direct supervision, the position safely and effectively executes agricultural land restoration program objectives as well as department wide plans that support all
chartered land uses and open space purposes. As part of a team, this role conducts tasks to rehabilitate degraded agricultural land for the purpose of improving agricultural
production; ecologically restoring historic agricultural land using nature-based solutions to help ecosystems adapt to and withstand climate change and to bring function back to our scarred ecosystems; help maintain Open Space and Mountain Parks’ (OSMP) agricultural infrastructure to aid in the success of OSMP’s agricultural tenants; and
performs related duties as assigned.

Please note this is a 9-month seasonal position expecting to end in December 2026.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Engages in agricultural and natural land management and restoration techniques
  • Conducts noxious and invasive plant species management, including herbicide applications.
  • Conducts prairie dog removal (on irrigated agricultural lands only) using Pressurized Exhaust Rodent Control (PERC) machines.
  • Installs and maintains agricultural fences, gates, and culverts.
  • Maintains/constructs/runs flood irrigation ditches.
  • Conducts invasive tree removal using chainsaws and herbicide applications (cut-stump applications).
  • Collects and sows native seed; installs and waters native plants on restoration sites.
  • Ensures safe and effective operation of power tools such as weed whips, power augers, PERC machines, and chainsaws.
  • Operates pickup trucks and pull trailers on and off road safely.
  • Conducts other agricultural and natural land rehabilitation tasks as required.
  • Communicates daily with the team leaders on daily and weekly work plans and project status updates.
  • Understands and comply with all policies, including safety best practices.
  • Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to work effectively as a member of formal and informal team; understanding the interests and concerns of others and able and willing to share and receive information.
  • Ability that can be demonstrated to conduct physical outdoor activity for 8-10 hours a day in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to identify what needs to be done and do it before being asked or before the situation requires it. Completes work in a timely and consistent manner. 
  • Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively with the public and coworkers, with excellent customer service skills.
  • Valid drivers' license and the ability to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record.
  • Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal history.​​

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION

  • Ability that can be demonstrated in building and maintaining agricultural fences, managing noxious weed species using mechanical and chemical methods, and operating and maintaining power tools such as chainsaws, power augers, and weed whips.
  • Experience identifying native and non-native plant species in an agricultural or natural lands setting.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • One (1) year of related experience

WORKING CONDTIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical and mental effort: Ability to hike and/or conduct physical outdoor work up to 10 hours per day. Ability to lift and/or carry up to 80 pounds while hiking over rough terrain. Ability to communicate with staff professionally and effectively, agency partners, neighbors, and members of the public.
  • Working environment: Ability to work under stress from demanding, and often rapidly changing priorities. May have exposure to hazardous field conditions, dangerous wildlife, and dangerous weather conditions.
  • Machines and equipment used: Chainsaws, weed whips, PERC machines, backpack sprayers, and other
    hand tools.
