Overview:

This position is responsible for education and technical assistance to landowners/operators in Jefferson County. Workload activities will focus on the CAUV program (75%) and on technical assistance to individual landowners seeking conservation practice guidance in the areas of agriculture and forestry (25%).    

The Agriculture and Natural Resources Conservation Technician is an employee of the Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District (JSWCD) and is ultimately responsible to the District Board of Supervisors. This is a full-time position subject to a six-month probationary period.  Necessary training will be provided to the successful candidate.

Essential Functions:

  • Support new CAUV applicants by providing guidance, information and education in aspects of landowners’ responsibilities.
  • Provide landowners currently enrolled in CAUV with conservation technical assistance in partnership with the Jefferson County Auditor and in support of the MOU agreement.
  • Assist with the District’s Forestry program.
  • Assist with the District’s soil testing service.
  • Help to plan and conduct technical workshop, field days, tours and other educational programs and events for agricultural and forestry landowner and producers.
  • Develop and maintain accurate and timely required forms, records and requests.

Qualification; Experience; Education:

Any of the criteria below or combination of:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an agriculture, natural resources or science-related field of study or
  • Associate’s degree with equivalent experience working in a related field or
  • Related training and work experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to talk one-on-one with producers and be able to present to an audience.
  • Must work independently and as a team player.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and walk in farm fields, woodlots and rough terrain. Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Applicant must possess a valid Ohio driver’s license, any applicable automobile insurance. Must be insurable.Ability to manage and organize multiple tasks, meet deadlines, time management and ensure high quality work.
  • The successful candidate will be required to pass a background check and drug test.

Selected applicant will participate in Ohio Public Employees Retirement, will be eligible for vacation, sick leave, paid holidays, health and life insurance, and workers compensation. There will be a probationary period of 6 months and the conservation technicians work shall be reviewed through meetings, monthly reports, and observation to determine the quality/effectiveness of his/her work.
