Status: This is a full-time, seasonal, 26-week, 900-hour AmeriCorps National Service Program.

Purpose — About Southeast Conservation Corps (SECC):    
Empowering youth and adults to cultivate compassion, responsibility and life skills through community service, hard work and land stewardship.  

Southeast Conservation Corps, a program of Conservation Legacy, is a non-profit AmeriCorps program. We engage youth (age 15-17) and young adults (ages 18-30, up to 35 for veterans) in service projects on public lands throughout the Southeast. SECC collaborates with land management agencies (United States Forest Service, National Park Service, State Parks, local municipalities, and non-profits) to host day or overnight camping crews and individual placements.  

Our AmeriCorps positions provide impactful educational and service opportunities that benefit both communities and landscapes. SECC’s participants reflect the population of the Southeast region, including youth, graduates, veterans, and individuals from various backgrounds.  

Position Overview:  

SECC, in partnership with Jimmy Carter National Historical Park, will host a Community Engagement Steward. This Community Engagement Steward is an AmeriCorps position that will help expand the park’s reach by assisting with outreach events, developing community-focused materials, and supporting targeted volunteer recruitment. Through service-learning projects, the Individual Placement will create meaningful opportunities for local schools and groups to connect with the park while contributing to stewardship efforts. The position will also strengthen partnerships with community organizations, resulting in co-hosted programs and lasting collaborations. Collectively, these efforts will leave behind sustainable resources, stronger relationships, and measurable increases in community awareness and participation at Jimmy Carter National Historical Park. 

This position will work directly with interpretive leadership to meet community stakeholders and local leaders and engage with them to maintain, foster, and develop working relationships to increase visitor use, volunteerism, and promote involvement from all members of the community.  

Description of Duties: 

• Plan, assist with, and evaluate community outreach events and public programs that highlight the park’s history and mission. 
• Develop and distribute outreach materials (print and digital) to engage local schools, civic groups, and community organizations. 
• Recruit, orient, and support volunteers to strengthen the park’s volunteer base and increase community participation. 
• Coordinate service-learning projects that connect educational goals with meaningful stewardship activities in the park. 
• Build and maintain relationships with community partners to foster collaborative programs and lasting partnerships.  

Qualifications: 

• United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien  
• Must be between the ages of 18 and 30, or up to 35 if a military veteran.    
• Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent before using the education award  
• Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check  
• You must possess a valid driver’s license and pass Conservation Legacy’s Driver Insurability requirements.  

 Preferred Qualifications:   

• Strong interest in public history, environmental education, or community engagement 
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with different groups 
• Experience with event planning, outreach, or volunteer coordination (paid or volunteer) 
• Basic graphic design or social media skills for creating outreach materials 
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting 
• Comfort with public speaking and leading group activities 
• Willingness to work outdoors in varied weather conditions 
• Familiarity with the mission of the National Park Service and public lands stewardship 

Physical Requirements:

Time Requirements:   

• Typically, this position is expected to serve 7:30 am until 4 pm, Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week – but exact service schedules may vary and will include evening and weekend service depending on project needs.  
• A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service.  
• Members may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.   

Orientation and Training:   

• Members will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.    

Evaluation and Reporting:   

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.   

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to:   

• Bi-weekly timesheets  
• Monthly Accomplishment Report  
• Narrative Monthly Report.  
• Bi-Monthly Check-Ins  
• Midterm and Final Evals  
• Exiting Task
