ALCC Yosemite National Part Individual Placement (IP) Overview:

Under the mentorship of a National Park Service (NPS) supervisor, the Individual Placement (IP) will assist and lead tribal stewardship and support community outreach and networking events. The IP will assist with interdisciplinary research, using a mapping device and photo documentation of project sites and participants when appropriate.

The Individual Placement intern will have the opportunity to develop many skills by working with different crews, shadowing crews and crew leads in creating safe work environments and applying those skills during tribal stewardship days. The IP will backpack for at least one, 8-day trip to remote locations and assist Wilderness Archaeologists with field surveys. Other project work which includes assisting restoration crews. The IP must be physically fit and able to lift 50 lbs. and work in extreme environments which include high altitudes and inclement weather.

Project goals of internship: In collaboration with NPS, ALCC and Great Basin Institute, create a 2023 crew development plan and project schedule for a 5-person crew, to contain recruitment and training plan, workforce development, logistics, and details.

Essential functions and responsibilities:

1) Learn about ALCC Program model in order to start a Conservation Corps for the affiliated Tribes of Yosemite National Park.

  • Collaborate with ALCC program staff, shadow ALCC crews, visit ALCC offices in NM and AZ.
  • Shadow NPS crews in the field to gain an understanding of the project work with Yosemite National Park and all 7  affiliated Tribes.
  • Coordinate with supervisors, attending tribal meetings and events, tabling, and outreaching to tribal communities about the development of a Yosemite Tribal Conservation Corps and scheduling “Career Days”.
  • Plan and recruit participants for an August 2022 “recruitment fair(s)” at one or more project site(s) in Tuolumne Meadows.
  • Communicate respectfully and effectively with tribal representatives and members about stewardship opportunities and community outreach events.
  • Identify potential natural/cultural resource projects with tribal partners and partner agencies, help build collaborative co-management goals and objectives. 

2) Assist and help lead tribal stewardship days, coordinate and plan field work with proper tools and safety topic mitigations. 

  • Work with supervisor to schedule and assist with leading black oak tribal stewardship days.
  • Communicate respectfully and effectively with tribal representatives and members about stewardship opportunities, ecological research components and community outreach events. 
  • Assist with project documentation and data collection. Create messaging, work with interpretation division to share success of project completion (blogs/press releases).

3) Assist with archaeological field surveys and ecological restoration work in the Wilderness and in remote backcountry locations. Use Leave No Trace Principles while backpacking and assisting Wilderness Archaeologists in completing field surveys and performing ecological restoration. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive cultural and natural resources. 

  • Keep detailed log of completed work and assignments. 
  • Hike to sites, read site records and maps. Assist in identifying cultural resources.
  • Use safe work practices including proper lifting techniques and clear communication.

Required Skills

Community volunteering and event planning. Post-secondary education or progress towards a degree and/or work experience in landscaping, restoration, anthropology/archeology, cultural burning, firefighting. Organizational ability, oral communication, interpersonal skills, program development/vision, and recruitment.

Required Experience

  • Have US Citizenship or Legal Permanent Residency status.
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • All offers of positions are conditional upon completion of an acceptable: 
  • A nationwide check of the National Sex Offender Public website; 
  • A fingerprint-based check of FBI criminal history record; and a check of the State criminal history record repository for the individual’s State of residence AND State of service,
  • Must be eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award
  • Full vaccination against COVID-19 by the first day of employment and ability to provide proof of vaccination before starting.
