The Campaign to Save The Boundary Waters is led by Northeastern Minnesotans for Wilderness (NMW), originally organized by residents in and around Ely, Minnesota. We are dedicated to continuing this national movement to protect the clean water, clean air, wetlands and boreal forest of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and its watershed from toxic pollution from proposed sulfide-ore copper mining. NMW’s Water Quality Monitoring Program began in 2019 with the purpose of collecting a robust set of baseline water chemistry data in the Rainy River Headwaters Watershed. Each year since then the program has expanded to encompass more projects, personnel, and areas of study. NMW partners with dozens of local and national conservation organizations and businesses.
Wilderness and the pursuit of its protection should be made to be welcoming and accessible to all. NMW is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of the organization as it works to protect this special place for everyone and for generations to come. See NMW’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice commitment here.
