The reporting location for this position is Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area in Borrego Springs, CA. This position will work under the supervision of Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory).
The Archeological Specialist will conduct surveys for historic and prehistoric cultural resources, and monitor construction or other projects around the Ocotillo Wells District. The incumbent will gather, input, and analyze data using Esri Collector/Field Maps, ArcGIS Online, ArcPro, and Microsoft Excel. The Archaeological Specialist will complete paperwork such as site and isolate records (using the Department of Parks and Recreation 523 Form), monitoring and survey reports, and other reports and spreadsheets as necessary. The Archaeological Specialist must be able to safely operate 4WD vehicles and tools associated with the above tasks following training. Applicant must be able to work safety in high heat, desert environments and remote locations.
This position may work up to 1500 hours within 12 consecutive months, although current project need is anticipated through May 2026. This position is designated as not telework eligible.
Minimum Requirements
Equivalent to graduation from college with major work in anthropology specializing in archeology is required.

- The position(s) require(s) a Background Investigation be cleared prior to being hired.

State housing may be required. Special Requirement/Condition of Employment: Depending on the assigned location, the incumbent may be required to occupy state-owned housing to meet operational needs or may be offered state-owned housing if available. Housing assignments will be determined in accordance with Department policy, operational priorities, and applicable labor agreements.
