Description

The Great Basin Institute (GBI) seeks to hire an Archives Technician to join the Cultural Resource Services(CRS) Program and work cooperatively with the National Park Service, Lake Mead National Recreation Area’s Cultural Resource Program. The focus of this position to continue processing the park’s Natural Resource records (~100 linear feet).

Primary responsibilities/duties include, but may not be limited to the following:

  • Conduct such work as processing, appraising, arranging, describing, creating metadata and finding aid using current archival practices (such as more product, less process (MPLP)), and cataloging archival Resource Management records, specifically Natural Resource records.
  • Under the direction of, and in consultation with, network Archivist, Museum Curator, and the Cultural Resource Program Manager, archives are processed in accordance with current processing plan. Processing plan may be updated in consultation with cultural staff.
  • Assists volunteers with project work reconciling, cataloging, and digitizing historic photographs.
  • Assists with staff and public research requests.
  • Creates section 508 compliant finding aids to publish online. Increases digital accessibility for researchers and the public.
  • Supporting the Museum Curator with other duties as assigned, such as monthly environmental monitoring, weekly and monthly housekeeping, and Integrated Pest Management tasks, annual inventory of museum collections, contributing to outreach efforts such as social media posts, behind-the-scenes tours, and a variety of other collections care duties.
     

Compensation & Benefits: 

  • Wage: $24.00/hour, with potential to increase to $25/hour with favorable performance after 3 months.
  • Housing stipend of $300 per/pay period

Timeline

  • Appointment ends on September 18, 2026, or after 12 months, whichever comes first.

Location
This CRS position will be based out of Boulder City, Nevada where the Lake Mead National Recreation Area Headquarters is located. It is a 20-minute drive from the city of Henderson which lies on the outskirts of Las Vegas. Lake Mead National Recreation Area encompasses 1.5 million acres in southern Nevada and northwestern Arizona, in the transition of the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts, including mountains, canyons, valleys, and two vast lakes. It hosts 6.6 million visitors per year. From the mouth of the Grand Canyon, the park follows the Arizona-Nevada border along what was formerly 140 miles of the Colorado River. Opportunities for recreation abound. 

Qualifications

  • Degree in library sciences, history, anthropology, museum studies or related field; 
  • Prefer 1-2 years’ experience in archival collections management, including appraisal, processing, arrangement, description, cataloging, preservation, and research.
  • Experience entering archival metadata into the Interior Collections Management System (ICMS) database or other similar software.
  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented, possessing strong organizational skills to effectively plan and complete assigned workload within defined timelines;
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with a diverse audience, including co-workers, members of the public, and agency personnel;
  • Intermediate or higher skills using Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel, with ability to manually enter, manage, manipulate, and graphically display data; 
  • Flexibility to handle competing and changing priorities with a positive attitude;
  • Ability to work productively, consistently, and independently or cooperatively as part of a team to accomplish mutual goals;
  • Ability to complete activities involving prolonged periods of deskwork, lifting and moving heavy items weighing 50 pounds or more, and regularly walking/driving between curation and other facilities;
  • Possess a valid, clean state-issued driver’s license; and
  • Willingness and ability to consistently enact high performance standards and a strong work and team ethic in support of the goals and objectives of the position and the mission of GBI.
