Northwest Park Assistant Camp Director
The Town of Windsor, CT is seeking an Assistant Camp Director to work at Northwest Park’s Camp Foxfire, where children ages 4-14 learn about nature and the environment. The park’s 473-acre campus featuring native forests, fields, wetlands, and heritage farm animals will nurture each child's curiosity and help them gain confidence and self-respect while building relationships with other children and the natural world.
The Assistant Camp Director plays a crucial role in supporting the Camp Director by overseeing daily camp activities, coordinating logistics, and ensuring smooth execution of programs. Key responsibilities include managing schedules, supervising and evaluating staff, handling camper paperwork, and maintaining Camp Foxfire’s mission of inclusivity and fun environmental education. This position requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to problem-solve effectively.
This is a full-time temporary summer position with a start date of Monday, June 8, 2026 and ending Monday, August 10, 2026. Applicants who can commit to all work dates receive hiring preference. The hourly rate is $20.50 per hour and the work schedule is 40 hours a week, Monday – Friday, 8:15am-4:30pm, with an unpaid 15-minute break each day. First Aid and CPR training is provided for those needing certification/recertification. Onsite housing may be available upon request. This position requires a drug screen and criminal background check before hiring.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with camp administration, such as organizing materials, managing records, updating the Class Dojo app, and assisting in coordinating field trip/guest speaker events
- Ability to co-develop and deliver high-quality pre-camp staff training with the Camp Director
- Empower, train, and collaborate with Camp Teachers, offering guidance and support to enhance their teaching skills
- Contribute to professional development through observations and feedback with subordinate staff
- Contribute to program development, and step in as a substitute teacher when necessary
- Address camper needs, respond to parental concerns, and ensure overall camper well-being
- Foster a harmonious team atmosphere among staff, promoting collaboration and camaraderie
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or two years of experience in environmental education, interpretation, recreation, or teaching at nature-based centers/camps
- Possess a valid driver's license, be at least 21 years old, and have a clean driving record to ensure safe transportation of campers
- Excellent communication skills, coupled with strong problem-solving capabilities
- Proven commitment, reliability, punctuality, responsibility, and leadership skills, with a focus on managing camper behavior
- Demonstrate enthusiasm for outdoor education, adapting to weather conditions while keeping campers motivated and safe
- Physical stamina for outdoor work in all weather conditions and ability to be active throughout day-to-day responsibilities; emotional resilience and social skills to connect with campers and staff
