The Truckee Fire Protection District is seeking a highly qualified and motivated Assistant Fire Marshal to provide leadership and technical expertise within the Fire Prevention Bureau. This is a non-safety, non-sworn civilian position focused on fire prevention, code compliance, plan review, public education, and administrative program management. Under the direction of the Fire Marshal, the Assistant Fire Marshal supports the planning, organizing, coordinating, and implementing fire prevention and life safety programs while supervising assigned prevention staff and providing technical support to District leadership.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in administering and coordinating fire prevention and life safety programs, including the development of goals, policies, and procedures
  • Interpret and apply local, state, and nationally adopted fire and building codes
  • Conduct and oversee plan reviews for new construction, remodels, tenant improvements, and demolitions
  • Perform and coordinate fire and life safety inspections
  • Provide code interpretations and technical guidance to the public, contractors, developers, and staff
  • Prepare reports, correspondence, and technical documentation related to prevention activities.
  • Maintain prevention bureau records, databases, and electronic systems
  • Assist with administrative fire cause documentation in coordination with appropriate investigative authorities
  • Supervise and evaluate assigned Fire Prevention Specialist staff
  • Assist with budget preparation and monitoring for assigned prevention programs
  • Participate in recruitment, onboarding, and performance evaluations of assigned personnel
  • Represent the District at meetings, public events, and interagency forums

Desirable Qualifications/Experience:

  • 5 years increasingly responsible work experience in a fire prevention, public safety or public service organization with a focus on fire prevention, building and planning, wildfire mitigation, vegetation management or related fields
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in fire science, fire administration, fire protection engineering, business administration or a related field
  • California State Fire Inspector I and/or Plans Examiner I certification
  • Direct supervisory experience is highly desirable

Knowledge/Skills

  • Expertise in the California Fire Code, California Building Code, Title 19 and Title 24 CCR, and applicable NFPA standards
  • Technical knowledge of Fire Prevention principles, practices, and inspection methodologies
  • Building construction, design, and materials to identify fire hazards and determine corrective actions
  • Principles and practices of personnel management
  • Provide interpretation and implementation of adopted codes and standards; assist with research, development and revision of new codes, standards and policies
