A unique opportunity is available for a highly motivated anatomic pathologist with an interest in wildlife disease and pathology. The academic home for this tenure-track position is in the Department of Biomedical Sciences in the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University, with a joint appointment in the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.
The candidate will work closely with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, with the expectation they develop a program focusing on diseases impacting wildlife in Oregon and the western United States. Oregon State University offers numerous opportunities for collaboration in wildlife disease within the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine, the wider University, state agencies, and numerous non-profit organizations. Work with State Wildlife Veterinarian and staff on Oregon wildlife pathology cases and collaborate and provide consultation on OSU / ODFW wildlife disease research.
The successful candidate will participate in necropsy and biopsy service through the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. The OVDL is Oregon’s AAVLD-accredited laboratory and a member of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network. The laboratory has a diverse caseload providing outstanding opportunities to teach enthusiastic students in the professional curriculum and our growing anatomic pathology residency program.
Decisions on teaching methods and course content are made without direct supervision or review by the supervisor. Makes disease diagnoses based upon necropsy, histopathology, and laboratory data. Selects appropriate diagnostic tests based upon examination of case material. These decisions are not reviewed by other personnel. Makes decisions relevant to research activities including research laboratory organization without direct supervision.
20% Diagnostic Pathology:
Provides diagnostic pathology services to the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Responsible for necropsy and histopathology case coordination. Instructs senior students in the techniques of diagnostic pathology.
60% Scholarly Activity:
Pursues discovery in scholarly activity through collaborative research efforts in wildlife pathology, presents new information at relevant meetings, and publishes in peer-reviewed journals, books, and other media. Pursuit of extramural and intermural research funding as a primary investigator is also encouraged.
15% Teaching:
Contributes to the professional, graduate, and undergraduate curricula of the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine and the University, particularly in teaching General and Systemic Pathology. Instructs 4th year veterinary students in the techniques of Diagnostic Pathology.
5% University Service:
Shares in committee and other service activities of the College and the University.
Minimum/Required Qualifications*
- DVM or equivalent required. Education or degree related to wildlife diseases or in wildlife biology or management, or related field.
- Diplomate status or eligibility for taking the boards of the American or European College of Veterinary Pathologists.
- Experience in diagnostic pathology, teaching, and research related to wildlife.
- The ability to effectively communicate with diagnostic laboratory clientele, veterinary, graduate, and undergraduate students, pathology residents, staff, and colleagues.
For individuals seeking the rank of Associate Professor: Candidate should meet the OSU teaching, advising, research and service criteria for appointment at the desired ranks (see the OSU Faculty Handbook for details). OSU will consider previous years of experience at other, similar institutions towards timelines for rank or tenure promotions.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
Preferred Qualifications
- An advanced degree, preferably PhD, in pathology or related discipline.
- Experience of authoring or co-authoring wildlife related peer-reviewed research in wildlife pathology, pathophysiology, epidemiology, or a related field.
- Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
Working Conditions/Work Schedule
- Participation in the weekend on-call duty roster at OVDL is required.
- This position requires lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and the use of lift equipment to carry objects weighing up to 1000 pounds.
- Drives during field investigations of disease outbreaks.
