Several qualified Biological Monitors are needed to support biological compliance activities on a utility and infrastructure construction project in Southern Nevada near Las Vegas starting as soon as August 22, 2026. This is an independent contractor (1099) opportunity for professionals who enjoy working outdoors and are committed to ensuring compliance with biological regulations while supporting safe and efficient construction operations. 

Responsibilities 

  • Conduct biological monitoring during construction activities in accordance with project permits and environmental requirements.
  • Identify and document sensitive biological resources, including desert tortoises and other protected species, as applicable.
  • Communicate effectively with construction personnel regarding environmental requirements and compliance.
  • Complete accurate daily monitoring reports and digital data entry.
  • Utilize GPS, digital mapping applications, and mobile data collection platforms.
  • Maintain detailed field documentation and communicate observations in a timely and professional manner.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, Wildlife Biology, Natural Resources, or a related natural science field (preferred).
  • Previous experience performing biological monitoring or environmental compliance on construction projects is preferred.

Required Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to safely work outdoors in variable weather conditions and challenging desert terrain.
  • Ability to walk approximately 6 to 8 miles per day in desert conditions.
  • Strong attention to detail with accurate documentation and reporting.
  • Proficiency using smartphones, tablets, GPS, digital mapping applications, and electronic data collection platforms.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining effective communication with project personnel.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to work in the field for extended periods.

Project Schedule

  • Work schedules generally follow active construction operations.
  • Typical shifts are 10–12 hours per day, up to 6 days per week, depending on project needs.
  • Weekend work and overtime hours may be required based on construction schedules.

Independent Contractor Requirements

As this is an independent contractor (1099) position, contractors must:

  • Provide their own personal field equipment and PPE.
  • Maintain all required insurance coverage applicable to independent contractors.
  • Provide, operate, and maintain their own reliable AWD or 4x4 vehicle suitable for off-road travel; mechanically sound, no fluid leaks.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Successfully pass any required drug screening and background check prior to project assignment.
  • OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety certification or ability to obtain prior to project assignment.

Compensation

Excellent hourly rates based on qualifications, experience, certifications, and project requirements. Per diem and mileage paid.

Informal guidance from experienced independent contractors will be provided for individuals new to 1099 work and/or biological monitoring for construction.
