The Western Regional Office of Ducks Unlimited, Inc. (DU) has an immediate opening for an experienced Biological Resources/Environmental Specialist to help deliver DU’s on-the-ground conservation programs in California and Nevada. The position will be stationed in DU’s Western Regional Office in Rancho Cordova, California, and be part of a team of biologists, engineers, and support staff responsible for implementing DU’s mission by conserving, restoring, and managing wetlands and associated habitats.

Qualifications

Candidates must have at a minimum, a Bachelor of Science degree in a natural resources field. An advanced degree is desirable. Applicants must have at least five years of relevant experience. Applicants must have a working knowledge of wetland ecology; waterfowl, shorebird, and waterbird biology; as well as state and federal wetland conservation programs, policies, and laws.  Knowledge of California’s Central Valley threatened and endangered fishes is a plus. Demonstrated experience with various state and federal regulatory requirements (e.g., California Environmental Quality Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act) as they relate to construction of water conveyance infrastructure and wetland restoration and enhancement projects is beneficial. Excellent written and oral communication, organizational and problem-solving skills, and the ability to use personal computers are required. Proven proposal/grant writing skills, project management capabilities, and wetland restoration/enhancement experience are desired. Familiarity with the program area’s biological resources, environmental issues, and private and public stakeholders is beneficial.

Duties and Responsibilities

This position will be part of a team of biologists and engineers working on major water conveyance infrastructure and wetland conservation projects to improve water delivery and habitat quality for key wetland complexes and on floodplain reactivation efforts. The incumbent will work with a project team on all tasks related to biological resources including ensuring environmental compliance, implementing mitigation, managing sub-consultants, coordinating with stakeholders, conducting outreach, site monitoring, and integrating engineering and environmental elements of the projects. The primary focus of this position will be California’s Central Valley. Future work may occur in other high priority areas of California and Nevada. 

Other duties will include:

Project Initiation - identifying potential projects, developing/maintaining relationships with public and private stakeholders that may partner with DU, and writing and submitting funding proposals to various sources to secure funding for water conveyance and wetland conservation project work.

Project Management/Delivery - coordinating with landowners and other stakeholders, DU engineering staff, consultants, and permitting agencies to ensure timely and on-budget delivery of projects; negotiating project agreements; writing reports; managing budgets; providing biological technical assistance; and entering project tracking data in DU’s business information system.

The successful candidate must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, per the Safer Federal Workforce Task Force COVID-19 Workplace Safety - Guidance for Federal Contractors and Subcontractors. Upon employment, he/she will be required to show proof of full vaccination or apply for a medical or religious exemption from this requirement.
