The George Miksch Sutton Avian Research Center (Sutton Center) is a nonprofit organization located in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. We are dedicated to finding cooperative conservation solutions for birds and the natural world through science and education. The Role

The Sutton Center is celebrating 40 wonderful years of operations, and is now thinking about the future of the work needed to ensure continued success. The new CEO will report directly to the Board of Directors and be responsible for leadership and management of the organization, representing the Sutton Center to government agencies, foundations, partner organizations, research facilities, media and the public.

The CEO will possess the experience and skills required to lead a staff of biologists and associates, manage development and financial operations, and oversee project management while maximizing the facilities and assets of the organization.

Responsibilities

The incoming CEO will be expected to lead both ongoing operations and change management processes. The CEO will also lead the process to update the current strategic plan. The CEO will manage and ensure the acquisition of resources, particularly financial, that will lead to the successful execution of the strategic plan. It will be important to broaden the funding base and think through new partnership and fundraising approaches. To be successful in this role, the ideal candidate will have:

  • A demonstrable history of organization management (nonprofit experience a plus)
  • Experience leading strategic planning processes
  • The ability to generate internal and external buy-in around an updated strategic plan and the potential for adjustments in operations
  • Knowledge of human resources and experience managing a team with highly diverse functional skills
  • Knowledge of financial management, reporting and auditing procedures
  • An appreciation of avian species conservation and research operations
  • A successful track record pertaining to fundraising, grants and seeking new business opportunities
  • A history of successfully engaging various stakeholders – from nonprofit/research partners, to institutional/individual donors, to government entities, etc.
  • An understanding of project/process management tools and platforms to maximize efficiency and improve reporting
  • Excellent skill in internal communications, external visibility and public speaking
  • Critical thinking and creative problem solving skills
  • A university degree(s), ideally in the fields of business, science, and/or finance.

Compensation

Salary will start at $110,000 with final compensation to be reflective of the candidate's qualifications and experience. The Sutton Center also provides benefits, including paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance options, and a retirement plan with up to 3% employer match.

Location

The position will be based out of the Sutton Center headquarters offices in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Given the nature of the Sutton Center's work and the proximity of its current donor base, the incumbent will need to be based locally and work onsite. Relocation support is available for candidates moving from outside of Oklahoma.

Start Date

The Sutton Center's ideal candidate will start as soon as possible.
