Purpose and Role
Work alongside the City of Albuquerque's Open Space Division Staff* while gaining valuable hands-on skills to support a career in natural resource management and conservation. This position is year-round and up to 40 hrs / week. Roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Restoration and Recreation
- Manage invasive plants such as ravenna and kochia
- Plant and maintain native trees and shrubs
- Perform vegetation surveys, restoration monitoring, and data collection
- Perform trail work to support mixed-use recreation
Maintenance
- Clean up and remove trash and graffiti
- Maintain and install signage at trailheads
- Maintain shared vehicles, equipment, and tools
Public Outreach and Education
- Interface with the public on a regular basis to inform about rules and regulations, trail etiquette, and upcoming events
- Respond to general questions and concerns
- Work alongside volunteers, partners, and youth crews
- Report issues and violations of ordinances
Minimum Qualifications
Experience and Skills
- Demonstrated interest (either via employment, education, or volunteer work) in biology, environmental studies, outdoor education, outdoor recreation, land stewardship, trail work, and/or environmental justice
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Reliable, punctual, and accountable
- Growth mindset, takes initiative, problem solver, attention to detail, flexible
- Ability to lift up to 35 lbs, work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, and hike 3+ miles per day in uneven terrain
Preferred Qualities
- Ability to work full-time (though part-time roles are also available)
- Multilingual and experience working with diverse communities
- Wilderness First Aid, Wilderness First Responder, and/or CPR and AED certifications
Schedule Requirements
- Able to work weekends as needed
- Must be able to attend a full work day (7:30 am - 4 pm)
Requirements for Employment
- Be at least 18 years old
- Pass a background check
- Possess a valid New Mexico Driver's License with a good driving record
- Have or be willing to obtain a City Operator’s Permit (COP) and drive a City vehicle
- Have reliable transportation to and from Open Space’s Montessa Office

Work location
All Open Space properties throughout Albuquerque, but focused on the Bosque (Rio Grande Valley State Park).
*These positions are with Tryfacta, a contract employment agency, and are not City of Albuquerque employment.
