Stillwater Sciences is seeking a highly motivated and talented Mid-Level Botanist to join our interdisciplinary team, assisting in watershed assessment, resource inventory, impact analysis, and natural resource management planning projects. We are looking for botanists with expertise in wetland delineation, restoration design, and revegetation monitoring, as well as experience in habitat evaluations, special-status and invasive plant surveys, vegetation mapping and classification, database design, data entry and analyses, writing of technical reports or sections, environmental permitting, and plant taxonomy. Project work is primarily focused in Northern and Central California but may include projects throughout the state.

The Botanist will be responsible for:

  • Leading wetland delineations and navigating current regulatory guidance.
  • Conducting biological (botanical) resources evaluations in coordination with other biologists.
  • Supporting and/or leading special-status plant surveys.
  • Supporting habitat restoration planning and implementation, including developing planting palettes, providing input on planting design, writing revegetation and monitoring plans, coordinating with nursery contractors, and conducting revegetation monitoring.
  • Performing vegetation mapping and classification.
  • Technical writing, including being the primary author on reports or report sections (e.g., wetland delineations, biological resource evaluation sections, special-status plant survey reports, revegetation and monitoring plans, and CEQA document sections).
  • Potential involvement in project management.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience leading field crews for botanical and/or wetland resource surveys.
  • Excellent plant identification skills (sufficient knowledge of the local flora and familiarity with utilizing eFlora and/or the printed Jepson Manual to identify fresh and collected specimens to species).
  • Taken a field-based wetland delineation course and performed multiple wetland delineations in California.
  • Experience in restoration design (e.g., worked at a native plant nursery and/or worked on restoration design as a plant ecologist).
  • Familiarity with the CNPS Manual of California Vegetation (MCV) and vegetation mapping and classification procedures.

Qualified applicants should possess:

  • BS in Biology, Botany, Ecology or natural resource field and 5+ years’ experience in the environmental field; or MS in relevant field and 3+ years’ experience; consulting experience is preferred.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to sound science.
  • A team-oriented approach to work, ability to following directions and safety protocols.
  • Endurance to work long days (10–14 hour days) in all types of weather.
  • Ability to traverse difficult terrain, including steep slopes, muddy wetlands with standing water, and extremely dense brush.
  • Ability to use field equipment (compass, GPS, etc.) including operating 4WD vehicles in rough terrain and potential use of small watercraft.
  • A valid driver’s license and ability to commute to field sites.
  • Willingness to travel and work in remote locations (lodging provided) for 7–10 days maximum (typically Monday to Friday with occasional need for travel on the weekend).

Compensation and Application:

  • Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience and is in the $80,000-$95,000 range.
  • This role is hybrid, with at least three days in-office work required, with exceptions for fieldwork.
