Baxter Youth Conservation Corps Assistant Crew Leader Friends of Baxter State Park seeks a full-time, seasonal Assistant Crew Leader to support our Baxter Youth Conservation Corps (BYCC). The Assistant Crew Leader will play a key role in leading and supervising the BYCC, a summer trail work and service-learning program for teens from the Katahdin region of Maine. The Assistant Crew Leader will work closely with an experienced Crew Leader to deliver high-quality trail work to Baxter State Park and a positive, empowering experience to youth participants. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about conservation, have some trail-building experience, and are eager to gain leadership skills in a dynamic outdoor environment. This position is based in Millinocket, Maine and reports directly to the BYCC Crew Leader.
Essential Duties:
● Assist the Crew Leader in instructing, supervising, and supporting a crew of five teenage BYCC participants each week during the summer season.
● Guide teens in the construction and maintenance of trails, including tasks such as corridor definition, building bog bridges, installing rockwork, and painting blazes, ensuring that all work is completed to Baxter State Park standards.
● Provide support in supervising and mentoring youth participants, helping to create a positive, encouraging atmosphere focused on teamwork and skill development.
● Foster respectful and collaborative interactions among youth participants, parents, BSP staff, and fellow instructors.
● Serve as a role model by demonstrating safety practices, environmental stewardship, and a strong work ethic, while encouraging youth participants to adopt these values.
● Help promote a culture of safety by regularly checking on the well-being of crew members, participating in safety briefings, and assisting in managing wilderness hazards and changing weather conditions.
● Advocate for health and hydration through regular check-in breaks, emphasizing the importance of drinking sufficient water and maintaining proper nutrition during work hours.
● Accurately record daily activities in a crew logbook, including tasks completed, location of work, and any notable observations.
● Ensure BYCC participants are logging work hours on timesheets daily.
● In the absence of the Crew Leader, be prepared to assume leadership responsibilities and guide the trail crew effectively.
Desired Qualifications and Experience:
● Experience working with high school students in an outdoor or educational setting
● Strong communication and organizational skills
● Genuine interest in learning Baxter State Park’s trail work standards
● Passion for the outdoors and ability to thrive in challenging outdoor conditions
● Demonstrated integrity and a commitment to personal and professional ethics
● Current first aid / CPR certification (wilderness first aid or higher is a plus)
● Adaptability, friendliness, positive attitude, and self-motivation
● A sense of humor and problem-solving skills
● Willingness to travel extensively within Baxter State Park
● Valid driver’s license & clean driving record
● Prior trail work experience is a valuable advantage

Schedule & compensation
This is a full-time, seasonal position that lasts eight weeks from June 15 to August 7, 2026.
Starting pay is $20/hour, plus overtime past 40 hours.
