What Is Green River Preserve?
Green River Preserve (GRP) is a nonprofit, non-competitive, co-ed summer camp located on a 3,400-acre nature preserve in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina.
Our mission is to inspire environmental stewards through a joyful connection to nature. At GRP, the outdoors is our classroom. Through hands-on learning, outdoor exploration, creative activities, and shared adventures, we help young people build confidence, discover new interests, develop meaningful relationships, and deepen their appreciation for the natural world.
We are looking for enthusiastic, thoughtful, and adventurous individuals who enjoy working with young people and caring for the natural world. Whether your interests lie in youth development, environmental education, or outdoor adventure, a summer at Green River Preserve offers the opportunity to learn valuable skills, build community, and inspire the next generation!
Camp Counselor Position
Cabin Life, Connecting with Campers, and Making Lifelong Memories

Counselors are the heart of cabin life at Green River Preserve. Living alongside up to seven campers ages 6–15, counselors serve as trusted adults, guides, and role models, creating a safe, welcoming, and fun environment where children can build friendships, develop independence, and discover new interests.
Counselors take part in daily camp life alongside their campers, from morning routines and daily hikes to evening programs and camp-wide games. They also lead or assist with afternoon activities based on their interests and experience, including mountain biking, climbing, canoeing, archery, fly fishing, arts and crafts, pottery, theatre, music, fencing, and outdoor skills.
Counselors work as a team to plan and lead a two-day backpacking and camping trip on the Preserve. Staff receive training in skills such as orienteering, campsite setup, outdoor cooking, and backcountry hygiene to prepare for this experience.
This position is ideal for individuals interested in education, childcare, youth development, recreation, or outdoor careers. Advanced backpacking experience is not required, but a willingness to learn, an interest in outdoor activities, and a genuine enthusiasm for working with children are essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and support a cabin of campers throughout daily camp life.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and engaging cabin community.
- Assist with environmental education hikes and outdoor exploration.
- Lead or assist with recreational, creative, and outdoor activities.
- Collaborate with fellow counselors and Mentors to support camper development.
- Help plan and lead overnight camping experiences while practicing safe outdoor leadership.
College Credit Opportunity: Counselors may earn 10 college credit hours at no charge upon successful completion of the season, subject to program requirements.
