Camp Director - 5 Days of Sandwich

The 5 Days of Sandwich is a day camp offered for three weeks each July to children ages 7-10+ who live in Sandwich, NH and surrounding towns. Run jointly by the town of Sandwich and the Sandwich Conservation Commission, the camp offers a unique opportunity to explore local history and the natural world around Squam Lake, the White Mountains and other local landmarks.

The program runs Monday-Friday, July 6-24, 2026 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine. Enrollment is capped at 12 children per session. Campers participate in activities centered on history, conservation, stewardship and good, old-fashioned fun.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Camp Director is responsible for working with the Assistant Director in planning and implementing the 5 Days of Sandwich day camp program.

The Director works with the Assistant Director to:

  • Ensure the safety, well-being and enjoyment of the campers at all times during each session.  
  • Design, create, organize, and implement a rich outdoors based program, with assistance available from the Conservation Commission.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, the Town Administrator, the Conservation Commission liaison, members of the public, and other entities as needed.
  • Transport campers to and from various camp activities in a rental van.
  • Monitor weather conditions and other factors, responding accordingly to ensure the success of each day’s activities.

The Director is also responsible for the following:

  • Purchasing supplies and maintaining a budget.
  • Generating an annual report for the Conservation Commission. 

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Career or job experience in education preferred; outdoor education experience is ideal.
  • First Aid Certification required, and Water Safety training preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required, along with the ability/comfortability to drive a passenger van.
  • Knowledge of some of the many natural resources in Sandwich (for example: trails, streams and rivers, historic places and stories, etc.).
  • Some natural history knowledge like bird, bug, or tree identification preferred.
  • Access to a working cellphone with reception in Sandwich required.
  • Successful applicant must also pass a criminal background check.

COMPENSATION

Compensation is provided as a stipend ($3,000) and is paid on a pro-rated basis, bi-weekly, in accordance with the Town of Sandwich’s payroll schedule.
