PROGRAM SUMMARY

The Canyon Country Youth Corps is a Bears Ears Partnership program based in Monticello, Utah. CCYC provides young adults with opportunities to complete conservation service projects on public lands throughout southeastern Utah.

Projects include trail construction and maintenance, fencing, habitat restoration, vegetation thinning, invasive species treatment, and other conservation work in backcountry and frontcountry settings.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Field Coordinator provides field and operational support to help CCYC crews complete projects safely and effectively.

After training with the CCYC Manager, the Field Coordinator will assist with the Crew Leader Development Program in early spring and support summer and fall crews.

Responsibilities include helping train Crew Leaders, coordinating with BEP staff and agency partners, maintaining tools and equipment, and supporting crews at remote project sites.

The Field Coordinator will spend most of their time in the field. They will help supervise the safety, quality, and completion of conservation projects and support Crew Leaders with professional development, conservation education, team building, and member development.

DUTIES

Program Logistics

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized CCYC Basecamp.
  • Maintain and repair tools and equipment, including the chainsaw fleet.
  • Assist with crew de-rigs and equipment resupply.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Maintain a clean and functional food-storage area.
  • Purchase food and supplies for field hitches.
  • Plan project logistics and prepare hitch plans and project documents.
  • Coordinate vehicle repairs and maintenance.
  • Support project data collection and photography.
  • Assist the CCYC Manager and Corps Support Services as assigned.

General Administration

  • Work within the program budget alongside the CCYC Manager.
  • Assist with field-site visits, reports, and required documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with CCYC and BEP safety policies.
  • Document safety or conduct concerns and assist with corrective action.
  • Attend regular CCYC staff meetings.
  • Maintain records related to equipment, vehicles, incidents, and field operations.

Field Support and Risk Management

  • Provide support, evaluation, coaching, and guidance to Crew Leaders.
  • Enforce organizational policies in the field and at Basecamp.
  • Support project quality control and provide technical assistance.
  • Assist crews with essential field resupply.
  • Identify and address safety concerns and operational needs.
  • Participate in a rotating after-hours emergency call schedule.
  • Provide direct crew or field coverage when needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with a conservation corps, youth corps, outdoor education program, or outdoor-based youth-development program.
  • Experience in several of the following areas is preferred: trail construction and maintenance, chainsaw operation and maintenance, hand-tool maintenance, fencing, vegetation management, backcountry travel, and leading field crews.
  • S-212 Wildland Fire Chainsaws training or equivalent certification is preferred and will be required if not already completed.
  • Wilderness First Aid certification or higher is preferred and will be required if not already completed.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication, teaching, coaching, and mentoring skills.
  • Effective conflict-resolution and team-building skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a fast-paced team.
  • Positive attitude and ability to have fun while working outdoors with young adults.
  • Ability to remain calm and flexible in remote and changing conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license, insurable driving record, and acceptable background check.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • This position requires overnight travel and nontraditional hours, including some weekends and evenings.
  • The Field Coordinator must be able to sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, lift, and carry equipment. They must be able to hike and work on rough, uneven, and remote terrain in varying weather conditions.
  • The position may require extended physical activity and work in backcountry environments. The Field Coordinator must be able to operate vehicles, computers, office equipment, hand tools, and field equipment.
  • The Field Coordinator may be required to lift and carry up to 50 pounds without assistance.
