GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Wyoming Game and Fish Department's Wildlife Health Laboratory is seeking one chronic wasting disease (CWD) laboratory technician. This position is an integral part of a fast-paced seven member diagnostic laboratory and is responsible for assisting with the department's statewide chronic wasting disease (CWD) surveillance within a laboratory setting. The position is located in Laramie, WY and will be 6 months in duration; housing is not provided.
This position would provide valuable experience for anyone interested in pursuing graduate school or a career in a laboratory, diagnostics or wildlife.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.
- Prepares and processes samples within a laboratory setting.
- Maintains quality control by following quality assurance procedures and documentation.
- Enters and manages data
- May collect tissues from hunter-harvested deer, elk, and moose (at the Laramie Regional office).
- Maintains laboratory equipment.
- Assists with other laboratory duties as required.
- Possible opportunities for wildlife sampling/capture in the field.
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE:
- Must have an interest in learning, or basic knowledge of a diagnostic laboratory and ability to accurately perform laboratory procedures.
- Self-motivated and able to maintain a positive attitude throughout the duration of employment.
- Pays attention to detail, instruction, and has good organizational skills.
- Able to work both independently and in close cooperation with others.
- Able to perform monotonous tasks for long periods while continuing to be productive.
- Able to work overtime during peak testing demand.
- Has strong problem-solving skills, ability to multitask, and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Able to organize and inventory samples.
- Has strong work ethic.
- Has basic knowledge of chronic wasting disease
- Able to communicate effectively with members of the department and the public
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Ability to sit at a laboratory bench or computer for long periods.
- Ability to process bloody, foul-smelling tissue samples.
- Ability to work with bleach and other chemicals.
NOTES:
- FLSA: Non-Exempt
- 95% of this position involves laboratory diagnostics and data management within a veterinary laboratory; 5% of duties occur outside the laboratory.
- Successful applicants for employment must pass a background check prior to appointment.
- CDL is not required.
- Seeking one, six-month position located in Laramie, WY.
- Position is expected to start around October 1st.
