Nucear free cities played a critical role in building momentum towards the negotiation of a Nuclear Ban Treaty. Now, almost 100 cities and subnational governments around the world have called for the negotiation of a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty and helped build significant momentum behind this bold new policy proposal.
From Rome to Sydney, the State of Hawai’i to Lima, this work has scaled significantly on all corners of the world. To take the next step in these efforts, the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative is hiring a skilled and dedicated Cities & Subnational Campaign Coordinator who can help support hundreds more governments around the world at a municipal and subnational level to join the campaign for a Fossil Fuel treaty by publicly endorsing the proposal and advocating that their national governments join a growing bloc of nation-states formally seeking a negotiating mandate.

The Cities & Subnational Campaign Coordinator will join the fast-growing International Support Team for the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative. They will work closely with the Campaigns and Communications teams to ensure that this global campaign scales significantly around the world — with a wave of government endorsements building further momentum in the near future.
Reaching this goal will require a skilled strategist and campaign coordinator who can not only engage elected officials from governments around the world but also support a network of civil society organisations and advocacy groups interested in approaching their own governments.

The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative is a fiscally sponsored project of Earth Island Institute. As such, the Cities & Subnational Coordinator will be an employee of Earth Island Institute if based in the United States, and otherwise hired through a third-party employment platform, subject to employment standards at the Earth Island Institute.

The salary range for this role, inclusive of mandated employer pensions, is $50,000 - $65,000 USD. Salary is paid in local currency, and set based on the successful candidate's experience level and location. Treaty/Earth Island do not hire outside this salary range for this role level, in order to ensure equitable pay across our team.
In rare circumstances when a candidate is overqualified for this level of role, and thus can operate at a higher level and take on even more responsibility, we would hire that candidate into a more senior role, with increased responsibilities and expectations. It is possible that a candidate hired into the more senior role would take on management of other team members in the future. That more senior role would have the title Cities & Subnational Campaign Manager, and the salary range, inclusive of mandated pensions etc, would be $60,000 -$80,000 USD, paid in local currency, and set depending on experience and location.

Key Responsbilities
- Develop and execute a campaign strategy to build momentum globally from cities and subnational governments supporting the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty proposal particularly in target countries most likely to formally support the Treaty proposal.
- Scale engagement with councilmembers, Mayors and senior officials in subnational governments including producing briefing materials, joining meetings and coordinating with other team members and partners leading on political engagement.
- Scale and launch the Mayors Declaration for a Fossil Fuel Treaty
- Deepen and strengthen relationships with other major networks of city and subnational governments such as the Under2 Coalition, the Global Covenant of Mayors on Climate & Energy, C40, ICLEI and Energy Cities
- Support a network of civil society organisations, local groups and activists from a broad range of constituencies and regions to approach their own city councils and subnational governments encouraging
- Support public communications of major moments and governments endorsements, demonstrating growing support for the Fossil Fuel Treaty and a just transition, including collaboration with the Communications Team and partners to in their production of communications outputs for social media, traditional media and events
- Engage with prominent city and subnational government officials as campaign spokes and Treaty Champions, activating them to call for a Treaty in quotes, statements, op eds, events and speeches
- Encourage governments at a municipal and subnational level to go beyond endorsing the Fossil Fuel Treaty both through activating them to advocate for national-level support for the proposal, and to implement policy reforms to phase out fossil fuel production and use within their own jurisdiction
Required and desired experience and attributes
Required:
- A deep passion for climate justice and supporting an equitable transition to a world without coal, oil or gas.
- At least 3-5 years of experience in project management and/or scaling a major advocacy campaign
- Experience in engaging and activating a network of organisations and individuals to join a campaign and advocate for a specific policy demand
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills, strong initiative, and motivation.
- Commitment to contributing to an anti-racist, inclusive organisational culture.
- Ability to work irregular hours and with a remote and virtual team to participate in a global initiative.
Desired:
- Fluency in languages other than English is highly desirable, particularly in French, Spanish, Portuguese or Arabic
- Experience in campaign communications including copywriting, digital advocacy, social media or content production
- Experience in direct political engagement with policymakers at a municipal, subnational or national level
