The Resource Assistants Program seeks to engage ethnically and racially diverse young professionals in natural resource careers. You must be:

Position Description: 

The Civil Engineering Interns Resource Assistant will perform one or more of the following duties as they develop toward a higher-level position: assisting civil engineers in various engineering tasks related to transportation, facilities, environmental, and structural engineering. These duties include conducting preliminary surveys and site investigations, participating in transportation and facilities planning, evaluating project economic feasibility, preparing design criteria,  developing design and contract package components, providing contract administration assistance, and responding to emergencies.

Responsibilities:

  • Making preliminary road locations, testing road surfacing materials, gathering data for maintenance surveys, participating in inspections, and performing a variety of other duties to gain work experience and training.
  • Making design calculations and preparing specifications for selected portions of projects related to forest development facilities. These projects may include roads, trails, water and wastewater facilities, buildings, bridges, culverts, and other engineering facilities. Assist in inspecting construction projects for adherence to approved plans and specifications. 
  • Assess compliance with respect to dimensions, designated material usage, progress of work, and other relevant factors. 
  • Data collection, construction inspection, and contract assembly
  • Conducts topographic and alignment surveys for selected projects using surveying instruments. Prepares field notes and assists in creating topographic and detailed maps. Transfer field notes into detailed drawings, develop preliminary road gradients, prepare design data forms, compute project quantities, and transfer these quantities and final gradients to plans.

Qualifications:

Major studies relevant to this position include Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Engineering Construction Management. Knowledge in basic professional civil engineering principles and concepts is necessary to apply standard engineering practices in limited phases of survey, design, construction, and/or maintenance projects. The ability to articulate thoughts effectively, both verbally and in writing, is required to document and report on technical aspects of work.

  • Knowledge of fundamental engineering principles

  • Ability to take initiative
  • Experience with or willingness to learn engineering software
  • No professional experience required. 
  • Physical capabilities include working in remote forest locations (hiking/walking on rough terrain), operating government vehicles, and minor lifting such as transporting surveying equipment to and from project sites
  • Ability to multitask, work independently, and communicate effectively
