POSITION SUMMARY:

The Climate Projects Specialist is responsible for providing climate change research, project management support, technical support, and Community engagement and outreach for the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), including climate change background research, climate change project coordination, developing climate change curriculum modules for Community outreach, supporting module delivery at Community workshops, and supporting DEP’s implementation of DEP’s Climate Change Strategic Plan as related to the Swinomish Climate Adaptation Action Plan. This is a full-time position, dependent on grant funding, supervised by the Environmental Director.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Programmatic duties include researching resource materials about climate change related to DEP’s Climate Change Strategic Plan including from recent tribal environmental or climate reports, events, policies, codes, and workshops;.
    • Coordinates qualitative and/or quantitative primary research projects about climate change, analyzing qualitative and quantitative data, and writing research reports for use in curriculum development;
    • Preparing internal climate change technical reports based on compiled research.
  • Implements and manages 1-2+ DEP climate change grants and contracts as directed by senior managers including;
    • Assist in grant development, researching available grants, drafting work plans & budgets for on-going and new applications for grants/funds;
    • Coordinating program spending;
    • Draft project/contract work scope and manage 1-2 projects including tracking budgets for contracts.
  • Manage special studies and analytical projects to fill data gaps and identify potential climate change hazards or impacts:
    • Data collection and preliminary data analysis;
    • Technical reporting and review;
    • Initiates and maintains coordination and collaboration between multiple departments and programs at Swinomish on Swinomish Climate Change Initiative work.
  • Develops climate change curriculum outreach materials and/or modules;
    • Coordinates curriculum delivery workshops and outreach to the Tribal Community.
  • Because of the Tribes commitment service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in climate change mitigation and/or disaster risk reduction and college coursework in environmental, physical, or natural science, or other discipline appropriate to the position; Master’s degree IS DESIRED.
  • 1 year of experience as Climate Change Intern, or comparable job experience
  • Academic coursework or professional experience in primary research (qualitative and/or quantitative) and in secondary research, such as literature reviews, research papers and media summaries
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to work independently, efficiently, detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills;
  • Strong analytical and writing skills, with the ability to condense and summarize research data into meaningful findings;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Experience performing multi-faceted office support, including detailed record keeping, filing and organization;
  • Innate curiosity to learn more and dig deeper;
  • Initiative to build, strengthen, and maintain relationships between the DEP and the Community members;
  • Collaborative team player able to integrate with a diverse team;
  • Self-motivated and disciplined in time management to complete project tasks independently.
