The Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program (CBBEP) is seeking a passionate and dedicated Coastal Bird Outreach Coordinator to join our active and diversified Coastal Bird Program. This position will be responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing Coastal Bird Program public outreach efforts to educate and build a culture of self-governance among coastal recreationists with the ultimate goal of reducing impacts to coastal birds from human disturbance. CBBEP is looking for a team member with a positive attitude, ability to handle multiple tasks, and excellent organizational skills. Must also have excellent communication skills to engage with team members, general public, students, teachers, volunteers, and numerous partners. 

This is a three-year grant-funded position, but the position may be extended based on program success and acquisition of future grants.  This position works under moderate supervision with a great deal of latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. The position reports to the Coastal Bird Program Director but will also work closely with additional CBBEP staff that are responsible for implementing public and K-12 education and outreach programming.

Applicants should be aware that job duties will require some work outside of normal business hours and on weekends, as well as extensive travel throughout the Texas coast. Duties will also require work outdoors that is subject to south Texas weather conditions. Frequent and sometimes extended (multiple nights) travel to disseminate outreach programming and attend meetings mostly in Texas is required. Applicant must possess a valid Texas Driver License and have reliable transportation.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the development and implementation of a Texas coast-wide marketing campaign focused on helping colonial nesting waterbirds by changing attitudes and behaviors.
  • Create (from concept to build-out) a traveling outreach trailer focused on colonial nesting waterbirds targeting all age groups.
  • Attend/participate in outreach opportunities across the Texas coast (e.g., Earth Day Bay Day, GLO Coastal Roundup, science nights, etc.).
  • Work closely with state and federal agency partners, including biologists and law enforcement, to foster a greater understanding of issues pertaining to colonial waterbirds.
  • Engage and collaborate with other NGO partners to amplify context-relevant messaging.
  • Deliver engaging, age-appropriate, and TEKS-aligned environmental education presentations focused on coastal birds in schools across the Texas coast.
  • Assess and develop K-12 TEKS-aligned instructional materials for K-12 science standards.
  • Promote positive relationships and train volunteers interested in coastal bird outreach.
  • Collaborate with other CBBEP staff to support broader education and outreach goals.
  • Meet obligations for grant milestones and develop reporting associated with grants.
  • Collect data for program evaluation and report on program outcomes.
  • Represent CBBEP at local meetings with partner groups.
  • Work with advisory committees, community groups and other stakeholders to coordinate, improve and stimulate support for, and involvement in, coastal bird conservation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION:

REQUIRED:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with degree in environmental education/interpretation or a degree in a field of science (e.g., biology, geology, environmental science, or another related).
  • Two years of recent experience presenting formal or informal outreach or interpretation programs.
  • Experience in curriculum development, instructional design, and educational outreach.
  • Strong knowledge of coastal ecology, conservation issues, and environmental education principles.
  • Passion for environmental conservation and commitment to promoting stewardship among youth and communities.
  • Highly motivated and self-directed.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Flexible and a self-starter; able to manage multiple concurrent projects while also being highly detail- and quality-oriented.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office.

PREFERRED:

  • Master’s degree in education, environmental science, biology, or related field.
  • Experience with Community-Based Social Marketing and branding strategies.
  • Knowledge of coastal bird ecology.
  • Familiarity with Texas bays and recreational constituencies.

CBBEP is a local non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the bays and estuaries of the Texas Coastal Bend. Since 1999, CBBEP has been working to create a Texas Coastal Bend with cleaner water and sediment, healthier habitats, greater public access, and a more aware and engaged public. With the help of federal, state, and local partners, the CBBEP has restored thousands of acres of marsh habitat, funded dozens of projects designed to improve water quality, and installed infrastructure to enhance public access opportunities. In addition to implementing projects that address priority issues like water quality, habitat restoration, and nature tourism, CBBEP has created organizational programs to conserve coastal birds and their habitats, conduct environmental education programs, and acquire coastal habitats for the purposes of conservation.
