Communications Officer, SBTN
The Science Based Targets Network (SBTN), part of the Global Commons Alliance, seeks an experienced Communications Officer to serve as the in-house expert to implement our marketing and communications strategy. This role is essential for effectively conveying the importance, relevance, and impact of setting corporate science-based targets for nature, so companies can contribute to global efforts to halt and reverse nature loss.
Ideal candidates will excel at creating compelling content and driving engagement across various channels. The Communications Officer will manage SBTN’s digital and social media presence, amplify the coalition’s voice, and support the delivery of the overall communications strategy. Reporting to the Director of Marketing & Communications, this role is pivotal in raising SBTN’s profile and engaging companies, partners, and other stakeholders through targeted outreach and impactful content.
The Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) unites a coalition of global environmental organizations in a civil-society and science-led initiative to collectively define what is necessary for companies and cities to stay within Earth’s limits and meet society’s needs.
Location: Flexible global location (preferred: North America, South America and Caribbean time-zones)
Reporting to: SBTN Marketing & Communications Director.
Compensation: USD $60,000-$80,000 depending on contract type, skills & experience and geography
Contract Type: Independent contract/consultancy contract for six months (Jan-June 2025, with a possibility of contract extension or transition to permanent employee
Working hours: Full-time (4 days also considered)
Candidate level: Experienced non-manager
Primary Responsibilities:
- Content marketing: Develop, write and edit high-quality marketing and communications materials for various platforms including website, social media, newsletters, events and press releases, ensuring that all content aligns with SBTN’s messaging and goals.
- Media relations: Conduct media outreach, prepare press releases and media kits, and coordinate interviews to secure positive coverage of SBTN’s work and impact.
- Digital and social media management: Manage our LinkedIn and X channels through daily content creation and engagement, maintain and update our website, analyze digital marketing performance, produce branded assets for social media, and coordinate technical support to ensure optimal user experience.
- Campaign management: Coordinate outreach to partners and other stakeholders; develop and distribute communications kits including producing assets; conduct post-campaign reporting to measure effectiveness and gather insights.
- External events: Plan and coordinate SBTN’s presence at key business-focused events throughout the year including research, outreach, preparing talking points and presentation materials and post-event follow ups; Develop an SBTN spokesperson bench and create event toolkits for consistent messaging.
Profile: This role is ideal for a communications professional who is passionate about driving positive change through clear, strategic messaging and enjoys being at the forefront of engaging businesses in efforts to protect and restore nature.
Experience and qualifications:
- Minimum 3 years experience in a communications role within the environmental sector; preferably in a non-profit organization.
- Exceptional writing and editing skills.
- Demonstrated ability to produce clear, engaging content tailored primarily to a corporate audience.
- Strong digital and social media expertise with proven experience in managing social media channels with a focus on LinkedIn, understanding best practices for digital content and using analytics tools to track performance.
- Proficiency with advanced data analytics tools including Google Analytics with a proven ability to track, analyze, and optimize digital marketing campaigns to inform strategy.
- Media relations skills: Experience in engaging with the media, drafting press releases and pitching stories to journalists and media outlets.
- Excellent project management skills and attention to detail.
- Experience with content management systems, specifically WordPress and email marketing systems, specifically Mailchimp.
- Experience with visual design and video production programmes, for example, Canva.
- Desired understanding of some of the major multinational events on the nature, biodiversity, and climate calendar – eg: COPs (UNFCCC and CBD), Davos (WEF) and others is a plus.

- Ability to work seamlessly across different priority areas, with a wide range of both internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong collaborative spirit, valuing teamwork across various functions.
- An engaging and competent communicator that has the ability to tailor communications to a wide range of audiences, balancing the need to be creative and technical.
- Fluent English.
Terms and conditions: SBTN is part of the Global Commons Alliance which is hosted by Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. Employment contract would therefore be with Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. At certain times of the year travel to team meetings will be required. These meetings are sometimes in the U.S., sometimes in Europe and occasionally in other parts of the world.
