Cooling Minnesota Communities Program
Great River Greening aims to expand tree canopies, empower communities, and increase equitable access to green spaces across Minnesota. As the recent recipient of a 5-year $10 million grant from the USDA Forest Service for the Cooling Minnesota Communities (CMC) program, we will increase equitable access to the urban tree canopy by planting, distributing, and maintaining trees on city property, school campuses, public housing, community sites, regional parks, and residential homes across communities identified as in-need of tree canopy improvement via the Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool.

Position Description
The Community Forestry & Stewardship Coordinator will play a key role in implementing the CMC program. This position will build partnerships with community groups, implement free tree giveaways, work with schools and students around tree canopy education and plantings, and build educational components for this program. This position will entail a mix of field and office work. This role will report to the Environmental Stewardship Director, while also working closely with our CMC Program Manager and Forester. A portion of the role will be in supporting Great River Greening’s overall volunteer and educational events program.

This is an exempt, full-time position with benefits including health, dental, 401k, LTD, Dependent Care, Health Care FSA, life insurance, and a PTO plan. The salary range for this role is $45,000 to $50,000 annually. Great River Greening offers a flexible workplace and staff are currently working hybrid-remotely.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Cooling Minnesota Communities Stewardship (80%)

  • Coordinate the stewardship aspects of the Cooling Minnesota Communities program, including tree planting giveaway events, partnership development and communication, volunteer integration, tree education, and the logistics of tree/supply ordering, delivery, site marking/preparation. This will include basic project management across the process of project sites being identified, working relationships formed, event/planting plans made and shared with all stakeholders, staging, and execution of the event.
  • Identify new community partners in the five CMC partner cities within our grant.
  • Coordinate all aspects of communication, outreach, and recruitment for tree-related events.
  • Coordinate all non-restoration aspects of volunteer events including development, outreach, recruitment, day-of staffing, logistics, reporting, assessment, and recognition. Work proactively with Stewardship and Conservation staff to ensure that events are developed and offered at a sustainable rhythm while meeting our diverse programmatic goals.
  • Attend most tree planting events, including some weekend or evening events.
  • Collaborate with the CMC Program Manager and Forester on all aspects of the program.
  • Collaborate with partners to leverage resources and expand the impact of the project.
  • Working with the Environmental Stewardship Director, incorporate diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice goals into the CMC stewardship initiatives described above.

General Great River Greening Environmental Stewardship Support (20%)

This work will vary seasonally, with increased outreach and relationship development effort in the winter and summer during our slower event seasons.
  • Support the Environmental Stewardship Director in providing strategic leadership of GRG’s environmental stewardship programming, ensuring proactive communication and engagement across Great River Greening’s staff and implementation of clear goals, assessment, and outcomes.
  • Support the mission of Great River Greening through other administrative duties, as assigned.
