Purpose:

Stewards Individual Placements provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and protect our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting the health of natural areas. Stewards, in partnership with WEST VIRGINIA WOMEN WORK, INC., are seeking a service member to support the Step Up for Women Construction Pre-Apprenticeship Program at our Dunbar, WV training HUB.

The service member will assist with delivering construction-based training that incorporates environmental stewardship, workforce development, and barrier reduction for underserved populations. This position will directly contribute to sustainable economic revitalization in mining-impacted regions of West Virginia.

Description of Duties:

  • Support the delivery of the Construction Pre-Apprenticeship Training
  • Assist instructors and coordinators with daily training activities including tool preparation, classroom setup, student support, safety monitoring, and facilitating workshops on environmental stewardship topics.
  • Assist with community outreach and recruitment in coal-impacted areas
  • Organize and attend outreach events such as job fairs, school visits and community festivals to engage potential participants and promote WVWW programs.
  • Distribute materials, speak about the program’s goals, and gather contact information for follow up.
  • Coordinate service learning and community construction projects
  • Support students and staff in organizing small-scale construction site projects such as building accessibility ramps or raised beds for local nonprofits.
  • Assist with scheduling, logistics, materials preparation, and community partner engagement.
  • Assist in HUB maintenance and Janitorial Support
  • Help maintain the cleanliness and organization of the Dunbar training facility by restocking supplies, organizing tools and classrooms, assisting with minor facility upkeep, and participating in monthly cleaning/checklists to ensure a safe environment.
  • Administrative and data entry support
  • Assist staff with basic administrative tasks including organizing files, entering program data, preparing materials for classes or events, making copies, and
    assisting with student file management and attendance tracking.

Qualifications:

  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
  • At least 17 years of age
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
  • Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
  • Must possess a valid drivers’ license and have reliable transportation
  • Engagement and Public Speaking Skills
  • Must have a strong passion for gender equity, workforce access, and supporting underserved individuals
  • Must be organized and self-motivated
  • Has the ability to work independently and a part of a team

Physical Requirements:

Time Requirements:

  • Typically, this position is expected to serve a 35-to-40-hour workday, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service
  • Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

Orientation and Training:

  • Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
  • Member will be provided with a variety of on-site training opportunities that support professional development, community engagement, and workforce exposure.
  • Program Orientation & HUB Operations Training: Introduction to WVWW’s mission, structure, student support model, and daily operations at the Dunbar training facility.
  • Construction Industry Exposure: Observation and participation in hands-on shop sessions (e.g., carpentry, electrical, plumbing) to build familiarity with the trades.
  •  Safety & Industry Certifications: The Member will be eligible to earn the same
    credentials offered to students, including OSHA-10, Forklift Certification, Red Cross First Aid/CPR, HVAC in Training, and Plumber in Training, as available during the term.
  • Digital Tools & Administrative Systems: The Member will receive training on Salesforce CRM, Google Workspace, and Google Classroom to support communication, documentation, and student tracking.
  • Outreach & Engagement Training: Coaching on public engagement, tabling at events, and recruitment strategies for coal-impacted communities.
  • Case Management & Support Services Overview: Introduction to how WVWW addresses employment barriers and connects participants to wraparound support.
  • Storytelling & Data Collection: Training on documenting impact through student outcomes, alumni follow-up,
    and narrative development.

  • Living Allowance of $592 per week.

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
