Job Title: Nature Sanctuary Assistant Conservationist 
Reports To: Spring Farm CARES Conservation Director 
FLSA Status: Non-exempt 

Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following. 

  • Habitat Restoration: Works on restoration projects including planting hundreds of trees each year and propagating native plants 
  • Trail Building/Maintenance: Updates/maintains Nature Sanctuary trails, access roads, footbridges, and boardwalks  
  • Assist Sanctuary director Matt Perry with supporting native wildlife populations  
  • Outreach and Education: Leads Nature Sanctuary tours and gives nature themed presentations 
  • Garden Upkeep: Performs regular weeding, watering, fence repair; creates new plantings throughout the sanctuary 
  • Independent Projects: Opportunities for independent conservation projects and professional development

At least two years of experience working in the field of conservation or possessing a degree in Biology, Ecology, or a related field. 

Certificates and Licenses: 
Valid NYS driver’s license 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Other Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of Spring Farm CARES Nature Sanctuary mission and policies 
  • Familiarity with the disciplines of ecology, biology, and a strong interest in naturalist skills 
  • Self motivated; able to work independently; innovates new conservation projects 
  • Team player; ability to support team members in their projects 
  • Willingness to be outside in ALL weather conditions, including heavy rain and negative temperatures 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Other Abilities: 

  • Plant identification 
  • Wildlife identification  
  • Experience in environmental education for both children and adults 
  • Gardening/horticulture experience 
  • Experience with carpentry/building/using tools

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must have a great amount of physical endurance and must be able to maintain a positive attitude in all conditions/activities. The employee must be able to walk for many hours over variable terrain. They must be capable of carrying heavy backpacks, supplies and tools for great distances and in virtually all weather conditions. Ability to comfortably lift 50 pounds and climbing ladders will sometimes be required. 
The use of snowshoes and/or cross-country skis is sometimes necessary to travel from place to place in winter.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be expected to work in uncomfortable outdoor weather conditions and sometimes for prolonged periods of time. The employee is responsible for dressing appropriately to withstand persistent rain, exceedingly cold temperatures, and hot temperatures. Similarly, the employee is responsible for taking precautions to mitigate the harmful effects from exposure to the sun, biting insects and poisonous plants.
