General Description

Join the City of Green Bay to enhance the Green Bay Parks and Greenways through an AmeriCorps program. Conservation Corps members are responsible for restoration efforts including the following:

  • 15% Trail maintenance
  • 25% Native plantings and maintenance
  • 25% Habitat restoration
  • 10% Volunteer and education outreach
  • 15% Training and job development
  • 10% Mapping and survey efforts

Schedule:

Monday - Friday, 8 AM. – 4:30 PM. 40 hours per week. Optional weekend work available.

TERM OPTIONS: 

September 22nd – December 12th (450-hour term)

September 22nd – March 6th (900-hour term)

September 22nd – May 1st (1,200-hour term)

Opportunity to sign on for another term pending performance review.

Examples of Duties

  • Complete plant maintenance and installation work, including grading, seeding, watering, weeding, mulching, and trimming. Plant trees, shrubs, and flowers.
  • Perform general greenhouse maintenance, including planting, watering, thinning, and pesticide applications when necessary.
  • Collect native seeds throughout the park system.
  • Remove invasive species by cutting, hand pulling, and/or herbicide applications.
  • Map various habitats, invasive species, and trail systems. Conduct vegetation and wildlife surveys.
  • Maintain, improve, and create trail systems through grading, mulching, and vegetation removal. Remove flooding debris near river trails when necessary.
  • Plan, organize, and implement community events to include volunteer days, days of service, and educational programming.
  • Keep accurate daily records as instructed.
  • Follow all policies, procedures, and the philosophy that is set forth by the City of Green Bay Parks, Recreation, & Forestry Department.

Minimum Qualifications Required

  • Must be 17+ years old
  • Willingness to work on crews comprised of people from different backgrounds in various environmental conditions. 
  • Valid Wisconsin driver's license and good driving record – Preferred. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Able to perform field duties while exposed to adverse conditions such as inclement weather and biting insects
  • Willingness and ability to use hand tools and brush saws to complete assigned tasks
  • Understanding or willingness to learn various conservation practices or land management techniques
  • Knowledge of safety practices related to general labor and equipment operation. 
  • Skill and ability to keep routine records.  
  • Ability to follow oral directions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. 
  • Ability to work up to 10 hours per day for 5 consecutive days in outdoor locations.
  • Ability to pass a background check.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to perform the following activities:

  • Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds.
  • Frequent walking, standing, bending, and lifting.
  • Ability to focus for long period of time on projects.
  • Ability to work in varied environmental conditions.
