Apply now to join the Sea Turtle Inc Conservation Team for the Summer 2026 field season! This internship provides the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with the day-to-day operations of field-based conservation work and is based out of the newly constructed, largest fully-enclosed sea turtle hospital in the world! Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Work with nesting sea turtles! Check for and apply tags, collect morphometric data and biopsy samples during the nesting process
- Nesting patrols via UTV (4-5 times per week in adverse weather conditions, including high winds, rain, direct sunlight, high heat and humidity)
- Excavating and relocating sea turtle nests
- Overnight, outdoor shifts during hatching season, including nest excavation, data collection, and hatchling releases
- Public hatchling releases
- On-call stranding response, including locating, retrieving, and documenting live and deceased stranded sea turtles
- Assisting the Conservation Department with other duties and responsibilities as needed, including but not limited to: vehicle and UTV cleaning and maintenance, hatchery upkeep, data entry, documenting/burying deceased sea turtles, field equipment inventory and maintenance, etc.
Requirements: Ideal candidate will have excellent communication and record-keeping skills, comfortable with a flexible daily schedule, has a desire to learn, are self-motivated, has the ability to work independently and with a team, and a positive attitude
Qualifications: The Jeffery George Internship Program is intended to help candidates gain knowledge and experience in the field between undergraduate and graduate degrees, or prior to beginning their professional career. As such, applicants must be recent college graduates in biological sciences, wildlife/fisheries science or other related field, at least 18+ years of age, US citizen, hold a valid US drivers license, and be available for the entirety of the internship period.
Ability to pass a background check. Ability to work long hours, including holidays and weekends. Interns are expected to work 40 hours per week, often staying late if needed and being on-call for after-hours stranding response. Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 lbs, and withstand hot and humid conditions.
Benefits/Housing: On-site, shared housing provided at Sea Turtle Inc in the newly built sea turtle hospital along with a $35 per workday stipend! Housing is air-conditioned and equipped with basic furniture and kitchen supplies. Please note, pets and overnight guests are not allowed in the housing. Food and transportation not provided. Personal vehicle is not required on the island.
