Basic Function: Responsible for the maintenance and enhancement of the native ecosystems, landscapes and biodiversity at Hawthorn Hollow.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITES

Conservation:

  • Responsible for maintaining and enhancing the natural landscape through invasive species control and other techniques that promote ecosystem health.
  • Continually monitors the landscape to identify management needs such as the introduction of new invasive species, erosion, tree falls, disease outbreaks, and more.
  • Researches and implements best management practices for wetland, prairie, woodland and riparian habitats.
  • Conducts ecological assessments, maintains a species inventory, identifies rare species, develops rare species management practices, and promotes overall native 
    species biodiversity.
  • Responsible for recruiting, cultivating, instructing, and maintaining a core of volunteers, interns and seasonal technicians to assist with land management.
  • Responsible for the preparation of proposals and grants specific to the ecological management of Hawthorn Hollow.
  • Collaborate with local agencies, nonprofits, and educational institutions and represent Hawthorn Hollow in conservation networks and at local/regional conferences

Educational Programming

  • Develops and leads educational programming related to nature, ecosystems, and watersheds.
  • Assists with other educational programming, as needed.

Special Events.

  • Actively participates in special events, as needed.
  • Assist with preparation of mailings for special events and all other fundraisers.  (Annual Fund Drive, Membership Drive, Newsletter, Birds and Plants, Educational Flyers, Concerts, Art Fair, Holiday Boutique Sale).
  • Assists with preparation and clean up of grounds and buildings for events.

Other Responsibilities

  • Occasionally participates as a non-voting member at meetings of the Friends of Hawthorn Hollow.
  • Assists with the publication and distribution of newsletters, membership drives, and 
    fund drives. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA or BS in environmental/biological sciences, or related field.
  • Must have a proven history in ecologically-based land management.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be proficient in grant writing.
  • Must have knowledge and concern for environmental preservation and a demonstrated ability to share that concern with others.
  • Horticultural knowledge and experience with wildlife management desirable.
  • Experience with a chainsaw desirable.
  • Experience with Microsoft Access or other database desirable.
  • Must be able to perform the physical duties as demanded by the job.
  • Must be able to manage their own time be self-motivated and work well with the Hawthorn Hollow staff, Friends Board, volunteers, and the general public.

HOURS

  • Full-time. Flexible, as demanded by the job, includes some weekend and evening programs and events.
