Summary of Position:

The Intervale Conservation Nursery (ICN) employs innovative ecological systems for growing bareroot tree stock of over 30 species of Vermont native trees for riparian restoration, agroforestry, and climate mitigation. The Production Technician is a key position that reports to the Conservation Nursery Manager and works closely with the Propagation Coordinator to plan, implement, and maintain nursery production field operations. This position coordinates native tree and shrub seedling production, including preparing for transplanting seedlings to the field, all aspects of field production and maintenance activities, soil health, and harvesting trees and shrubs from the field in the spring and fall with the tractor and plant lifter. The Production Technician is the primary tractor operator and mechanic and oversees the operation and maintenance of all Conservation Nursery equipment.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for planning and leading all aspects of ICN field production and maintaining the Nursery as a model operation.
  • Primary tractor operator.
  • Maintenance and repair of ICN tractor, implements, small equipment, and seed cleaning equipment and maintenance of Intervale Farm Equipment Cooperative (IFEC) equipment that ICN is responsible for.
  • Oversee ICN infrastructure maintenance/repair/fabrication (pack shed/cooler, irrigation pump and filters, greenhouses, shrub mat, storage sheds).
  • Fabricate and maintain irrigation system (pump, filtration, mainlines, and overhead sprinklers).
  • Track and monitor weather for the Nursery.
  • Oversee and maintain Nursery production fields, including:
    o Mowing and weeding with seasonal crew
    o Set up of overhead irrigation
    o Set up of electric fence for deer pressure
    o Cover cropping (order seed, plant, manage)
  • Operate tractor, the Selvatici Spader primary tillage implement for bed prep, Lundeby Plant Lifter for tree harvest, front end loader for wood chip mulching.
  • Chip wood for ramial wood mulch.
  • Work with the Propagation Coordinator to plan and implement transplanting and harvesting.
  • Update Field Map with field tasks throughout the season (weeding, fertilizing, mulching, cover cropping, cultivating, beds prepared for transplanting and harvested beds).
  • Track and maintain field records for fertility, pest and disease, and weed management
  • Maintain tractor hours and maintenance log and prepare SOPs.
  • Assist with seed and softwood cutting collection.
  • Participate in IFEC meetings and annual equipment jam.
  • Attend ICN Team meetings and Intervale Center staff meetings and events.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 3-4 years of hands-on tree nursery or diverse farm operation experience operating tractors and implements.
  • Tractor maintenance and repair experience.
  • Knowledge of organic practices and systems for fertility, pest and disease, and weed management.
  • Knowledge of Vermont ecosystem communities.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work outside for extended periods of time in various weather conditions.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work in a dynamic work situation.
  • Ability and desire to work with a team and provide leadership in the field.
  • Ability to represent the Conservation Nursery to the public.
  • A clean driving record is required for insurance purposes. An imperfect driving record does not automatically disqualify a candidate.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong mechanical skills and training and/or direct experience working with tractor maintenance and the tools of the trade.
  • Forestry, ecological restoration, and/or native tree nursery experience.
