WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER
The Conservation Practitioner III performs and participates in preserve operations including maintenance, management, development and coordination of conservation and restoration programs. The Conservation Practitioner III (CPIII) leads work teams to ensure the coordination, community support and implementation of preserve management plans. The CPIII maintains preserve areas frequented by the visiting public, removes exotic species and/or monitors and researches species, maintains tools and equipment, operates heavy machinery, and opens and closes preserve to the visiting public. The CPIII may track and record work progress including invasive species, thinning, and Rx fire treatments.
The CPIII will be responsible for assisting with planning and implementation of prescribed fire, including fire line construction, boundary delineation and mop-up activities. May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
- May build cultivate, and maintain relationships with landowners and key partners including public agencies and non-profit organizations.
- Operate fire equipment, if qualified, including ignition devices, 4WD trucks, ATV’s, UTV’s, portable pumps, pump engines, port-a-tanks, tractors, backpack blowers, brush cutters, chain saws, hand tools, and GPS units
- May organize, lead or monitor work groups consisting of staff, interns, and volunteers covering a wide geographic area.
- Financial responsibility may include working within a budget to complete projects, managing contractors, assisting with budget development and fundraising targets.
- May work under minimal and/or distant supervision; may make some independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context.
- Efficiently operates and maintains tools and equipment (chainsaws, brushcutter, UTV’s, ATV’s, weed trimmer)
- Assist Universities, Colleges and other agencies with research project implementation and coordination

WHAT YOU'LL BRING
- BA/BS/AS/Technical or vocational degree in science-related field and 1-year related experience in custodial and ecological land management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with natural systems.
- Experience in ecological land management principles.
- Experience operating and or repairing various types of equipment and machinery.
- Must have a valid driver's license. Please indicate this in your resume.
- Must be qualified as a Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2) or willingness to achieve in a short timeframe, including Introduction to ICS (I-100), Human Factors on the Fire line (L-180), Introduction to Wild land Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighting Training (S-130), and one training burn serving under the supervision of a qualified FFT2. - Must achieve physical fitness standard as determined by local Fire Program Manager and the TNC Fire Manual.
- Must have familiarity with the safe operation of equipment and off-road vehicles and must follow recommended safety guidelines and precautions specified for said work.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience as Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1) or working towards Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1) certification highly desirable
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- 1 – 2 years related experience in custodial and ecological land management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Some experience managing volunteers or entry level staff.
- Ability to recognize plant and animal species to complete preserve management activities.
- Knowledge/understanding of current trends and practices with respect to ecological restoration principles and able to plan and prioritize restoration activities i.e thinning, Rx fire, grazing, exotic and invasive species eradication
- Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
- Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers).
- 2 years' experience with GIS Databases (ArcPro, Field Maps, Avenza Maps).
- Communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
- Experience working with and understanding all aspects of prescribed fire as a management tool
- Willingness and ability to further training and experience with prescribed fire
- S-212 Wildland Fire Chainsaw (Basic Faller).
- Experience with troubleshooting various equipment such as: two-cycle engines, 4-cycle engines, and Diesel engines: Tractors, chainsaws, brush cutters, backpack blowers, trash pumps, military surplus equipment, Medium Heavy-Duty Trucks, lawn mowers, push mowers, brush hog, ATVs, UTVs, and 4WD vehicles.
- Maintenance experience of upkeeping facilities such as office building, well houses, shops, and ranch house.
- Experience with monitoring plots.
