Position Description
The Rockingham County Conservation District (RCCD) is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to assist with a variety of conservation projects during the summer of 2026. The ideal candidate is passionate about conservation, eager to learn new skills, able to work both independently and as part of a team, and enjoys a dynamic, hands-on work environment.
Primary Responsibilities
- Monitoring conservation easements on farmland, forests, and wetlands using a GPS smartphone application to collect and note observations.
- Completing accurate and detailed monitoring reports from data collected in the field.
- Controlling invasive plant species through the application of low impact herbicides.
- Assisting with habitat restoration projects, including brush cutting and native plantings.
- Assisting with farm equipment rentals and educational workshops.
- Assisting with outreach events and volunteer activities.
- Other conservation-related tasks as needed.
Qualifications and Skills
On-the-job training will be provided; however, successful candidates should:
- Ability to use GPS technology (smartphone-based apps) to collect track, point, and photo data.
- Demonstrated interest in conservation, natural resources, or related fields, including invasive species management and habitat restoration.
- Willing to learn safe handling and application of general-use herbicides, including proper use of PPE.
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with a wide range of people including volunteers, community members, and landowners.
- Enthusiastic, well-organized, detail-oriented, able to work independently
- Physical ability to hike rough terrain, navigate via map and compass, comfortable working alone in the field in all weather conditions.
- Valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and access to a reliable vehicle.
Preferred but not required qualifications include:
- Familiarity with New England plant identification.
- Basic map and compass skills.
- Comfortable driving a truck with trailered equipment
Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
This position involves outdoor fieldwork in variable and sometimes challenging conditions, including high temperatures, exposure to ticks and poison ivy, and dense vegetation. Applicants must have the ability to lift 50lbs and navigate steep slopes on uneven terrain while carrying a packing weighing 35 lbs.
