Borderlands Restoration Network (BRN) has about a decade of history as a rugged nonprofit that takes pride in grassroots efforts and hands-on actions that support its mission. With a focus on "doing," the organization hasn't yet found the best way to talk about what we do and why. In envisioning a strong communication strategy for the organization, there's a need to distill a sense of identity, both for external communications and for an internal sense of cohesion.

This work will require better context-setting: widening the view to include the bigger issues and environment that shape BRN's actions. To communicate about BRN's projects and their larger context—and to inspire readers to open their emails or follow the organization on social media will require a strong storytelling voice.

BRN seeks a creative writer to develop public-facing content that will play a critical role within our communications department and beyond. The content writer, in close partnership with the communication specialist, will be responsible for creating original and engaging written material that advances BRN's mission by raising awareness and building trust with constituents, donors, funders, media, and the general public. Additionally, the content writer will serve as editor and copywriter for BRN's printed and digital materials.

Geographic Location: This position is a part-time hybrid position. Candidates must be close enough to Patagonia, AZ, to attend monthly meetings, tours, events, and other high-profile events. 

Pay: $25,000 - $30,000 annually based on experience. 

Responsibilities Include:

  • A quarterly deep-dive story. We are seeking to produce beautiful, well-researched stories about specific projects and the issues they seek to address.
  • Oversee the production of quarterly e-newsletters, including working creatively, individually, and with other staff to plan and write content; editing content for clarity and consistency to match Borderlands Restoration Network's "voice." 
  • Develop and edit content for BRN's publications, including the Annual Report, brochures, trail guides, and other materials. 
  • Serve as editor for all BRN publications and public-facing communications including but not limited to e-newsletters, print newsletters, brochures, annual reports, blogs, and social media.
  • Write and distribute press releases and develop relationships with key media contacts.
  • With the support of the Executive Director and Program Directors, draft communication plans for grants and donor engagement.
  • Provide oversight and serve (as needed) as editor of social media content by working with staff and the Communications Specialist.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Great storytelling skills 
  • Ability to take complex content and make it readable/understandable to diverse audiences.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in grammar, style, and editing, with a keen eye for detail.
  • Ability to multitask and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong understanding of organizational identity, tone, and the ability to implement and maintain a consistent BRN "house style."
  • Collaborative team player with a positive attitude and a strong work ethic.
  • Able to work well independently.
  • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced and evolving environment.
  • A self-starter who takes initiative and can problem-solve.
  • Deep understanding of the biocultural reality of the Mexico-USA border region.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, or related field or equivalent work experience. Minimum of 4 years of proven work experience as a content writer, copywriter, or related field.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer for extended periods and be able to communicate using a computer and phone/smart device.
  • The employee is frequently required to sit and read and must be able to conduct site visits on rugged terrain and occasionally harsh weather conditions. 
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
