The Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation opens pathways for all to discover and steward the Selway-Bitterroot and Frank Church-River of No  Return Wilderness Areas and surrounding wildlands. In 2026, SBFC is partnering with the Salmon-Challis  National Forest to provide four River Checker positions on the frontline of the Wild & Scenic Salmon and Middle Fork of the Salmon Rivers. This is an opportunity to serve as a river steward, interact with visitors who come from around the world to experience the Salmon River systems, assist boaters, care for USFS facilities, and provide wilderness education and interpretation. These positions will not issue river permits.

 Essential Responsibilities:

  • Greet the public and assure they have the appropriate permits and equipment  
  • Provide educational talks on wilderness ethics and Leave-No-Trace practices
  • Check that campground fees have been submitted, and reservations have been marked  
  • Inspect boats for aquatic invasive species and check for Clean, Drain, & Dry stickers on watercraft
  • Maintain campgrounds and facilities, including buildings, picnic tables, restrooms, fire rings, boat ramps, etc.  
  • Answer wilderness and river questions and explain area rules and regulations  
  • Be available to assist with other tasks/duties as needed
