Defensible Space Specialists play a vital role in reducing wildfire risk by conducting defensible space inspections, providing education and outreach, and supporting green waste programs. Under the guidance of the Wildfire Prevention Manager, you will interact with the public, offer valuable assistance, and help ensure that homes and communities are better prepared for fire season. This is a seasonal non-safety, 40-hour per week position. A part-time schedule may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Weekend and holiday shifts may be necessary to connect with part-time residents. Up to 6 position openings are available.
Typical Day in the Life of a Dspace Specialist:
- Arrive at 8am,
- Fulfil customer service inquiries (phone calls, emails, resident requests, inspection resolutions) for approximately 1 hour,
- Drive to a beautiful Truckee/Donner Summit neighborhood
- Conduct scheduled and targeted inspections on foot in the Sierra air for a majority of the day,
- Fulfil necessary follow-ups from the day’s inspection sand customer service inquiries until 4:30pm
Minimum Required Qualifications:
- 18 years of age or older
- High School diploma or GED
- Valid driver’s license and proof of insurability
- Efficient in Microsoft Office 365, Word and Excel, with ability to learn other computer programs and tablet-based applications
Desirable Qualifications:
• Possess good communication skills
• Must be comfortable interacting with the public
• Have the ability to acquire and learn new skills quickly
• Customer service experience
• Wildland firefighting experience
• Experience performing defensible space inspections
• Education with course work in forest management, fire science, natural resources, environmental science, or other related fields
• Comfortable utilizing modern technology including computers, smartphones, tablets and applications
• Familiar with California Public Resources Code 4291
• Understands private property rights and plain view
• Familiar with green waste disposal programs
• Ability to identify and name common grasses, shrubs, and trees & communicate their fire risks
• Familiar with Home Hardening and communicating retrofit options to property owners
