Desert Biologist Field Position
Wildlands is looking to hire a full-time field biologist with desert field experience to help manage and monitor approximately 50,000-acres of preserved desert tortoise habitat and desert lands primarily throughout the Mojave, and Colorado deserts when needed. We are seeking an extremely independent, self-motivated biologist with a strong work ethic and good writing and excellent communication skills. The candidate should have experience conducting field surveys, identifying desert flora and fauna, familiar with desert tortoise habitat, desert vegetation habitat types, and non-native vegetation. Job duties will also include fence and sign repair, and trash removal.
Applicants should have experience working in adverse weather conditions with a positive attitude. Field work is year-round including summer months when temperatures often exceed 110˚ Fahrenheit. A substantial amount of travel will be required to monitor and maintain preserves.
Minimum requirements:
- Familiar with desert tortoise survey field methods and habitat.
- General knowledge and identification of desert flora and fauna.
- Capable of working in isolated desert wilderness areas.
- Physically able to walk up to 10-15 miles a day and lift 50 pounds.
- Ability to write technical documents.
- Basic computer skill knowledge (i.e., Word, Excel, and Teams).
- Familiar with Field Maps.
- Valid California driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Experience in the operation of 4-wheel drive vehicles and all-terrain vehicles.
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s or Associate degree in wildlife, biology, or related fields.
- Experience with remote digital data collection systems.
- Basic maintenance skills for vehicle operation.
- Experience with or knowledge of Mohave ground squirrel camera trapping.
- Familiar with State and federally listed species.
- Familiar with western burrowing owl survey methods.
- Familiar with flat-tailed horned lizards.
