Development & Communications Fellow

Who We Are and What We Do

Save The Bay’s mission is to protect and restore San Francisco Bay for people and wildlife. We are the only regional organization that integrates political advocacy, wetland restoration, and education to shape a healthy and resilient region. We are a team of passionate people, and at the core, we are collaborative, supportive, dedicated, and bold.

Over two decades, Save The Bay has become a Bay Area leader in the science and practice of habitat restoration, focused on tidal marsh transition zone habitat at landscape-scale for recovery of endangered species, and for ecosystem resilience in the face of climate change. We enlist thousands of volunteers annually to restore the shoreline and educate Bay Area students to be the next generation of Bay stewards through hands-on experiential education and online learning.

Position Description

Place yourself at the intersection of Save The Bay’s restoration, policy, and fundraising campaigns in a dynamic role that collaborates with staff across multiple departments and sits within the Development and Communications Team. In this position, you’ll support fundraising efforts that fuel restoration projects, policy initiatives, and community events. You’ll help strategize and create content, learn digital marketing and fundraising best practices, and gain hands-on experience in professional networking and community partnership building. This fellowship is primarily remote, with in-person workdays twice a month at our downtown Oakland office and/or other locations. A laptop and other necessary equipment will be provided.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support development and communications efforts by creating compelling content—including emails, blogs, social media posts, and outreach materials—that amplifies the organization’s brand, events, and fundraising campaigns.
  • Assist with donor stewardship through thank-you calls, engagement on fundraising platforms, and direct donor outreach.
  • Help develop and implement digital fundraising campaigns via email and social media.
  • Conduct research and assist in growing our network of supporters and partners by identifying potential donors, developing partnerships, and participating in outreach opportunities (which may include in-person events or corporate site visits).
  • Provide support in the planning and execution of events, including Bay Day, our largest community engagement event in October.
  • Take on special projects that align with organizational priorities and your personal career goals.
  • Participate in regular team and all-staff meetings to gain insight into the organization’s strategy, programs, and operations.
  • Assist with administrative and program support tasks as needed.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Interest in San Francisco Bay environmental issues and enthusiasm for Save The Bay’s mission and programs.
  • Strong writing and technology skills, with a willingness to learn new tools and applications.
  • Detail-oriented, with excellent communication and organizational abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively across cultures, with a commitment to learning, communicating, and collaborating respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Minimum commitment of 20 hours per week for 6 to 12 months.
  • Willingness to follow and actively participate in COVID-19 safety protocols.
  • Experience with Salesforce or other databases is a plus.
