Pacific Wildlife Care – Director of Facilities 

Full-Time  | Non- Exempt/Hourly | Reports to: Executive Director

Position Summary

The Director of Facilities is responsible for the overall maintenance, functionality, and safety of Pacific Wildlife Care’s (PWC) wildlife rehabilitation center and related facilities. This position ensures that the physical environment supports the highest standards of animal care, staff and volunteer safety, and operational efficiency.

Working closely with the Executive Director and the Director of Animal Care (Veterinarian) the Director of Facilities oversees building systems, animal enclosures, pools, equipment, and grounds, ensuring compliance with building, health, safety, and environmental regulations.

This role is hands-on and ideal for an individual who enjoys problem-solving, organizing, coordinating projects, and contributing to the success of a mission-driven team dedicated to wildlife conservation and rehabilitation.

Key Responsibilities

Facilities Maintenance & Operations

• Oversee the maintenance, repair, and improvement of all PWC buildings, animal enclosures, aviaries, pools, and support structures.
• Develop and manage a preventative maintenance schedule to ensure reliability and longevity of facility systems and equipment.
• Conduct routine inspections to identify and resolve safety hazards, maintenance needs, and operational inefficiencies.
• Conduct and manage inspections and reporting for agency regulation including but not limited to APCD, EHS and Regional Water. 
• Maintain and work with vendors to manage service on HVAC, plumbing, lighting, electrical, and other building systems.
• Oversee waste management, including trash, recycling, green waste, and animal/medical waste, ensuring proper storage and disposal in accordance with regulatory standards.
• Manage facility security systems, including locks, gates, alarms, and surveillance, ensuring staff access and safety.

Equipment & Infrastructure

• Maintain and repair critical rehabilitation equipment, including washing machines, freezers, food preparation equipment, and power tools.
• Maintain water systems and equipment for animal care pools to meet PWC water quality requirements.
• Manage inventory of maintenance tools, materials, and supplies; purchase replacements as needed.
• Coordinate with vendors and contractors for specialized repairs, inspections, and construction projects.
• Maintain records of repairs, inspections, and equipment service histories.

Project Management & Coordination

• Support construction, improvement, and sustainability projects in collaboration with the Executive Director and Director of Animal Care.
• Coordinate and assist in generating cost estimates with contractors, architects, inspectors, and other project partners.
• Ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and within approved budgets and timelines.
• Provide regular updates on project status and maintenance priorities to the Executive Director.

Safety & Compliance

• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment throughout the facility.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA, CDFW, USFWS, OWCN, and other relevant regulatory agencies.
• Conduct and document routine safety checks on enclosures, equipment, and grounds.
• Participate in emergency preparedness and response planning for natural disasters, power outages, hazardous materials, and other incidents.
• Manage the Consolidated Emergency Response Contingency (CERS) plan through Environmental Health Services (EHS), including all documents, training, materials and reporting as required.
• Develop and maintain Operation Safety Manuals (OSM) and conduct/manage safety training for staff and volunteers.
• Assist in implementing environmentally sustainable practices related to energy use, water conservation, pollution prevention, and waste reduction.

Collaboration & Support

• Coordinate with the Director of Animal Care to ensure maintenance activities do not disrupt animal care operations.
• Communicate facility needs, priorities, and ongoing work clearly with staff, volunteers, and leadership.
• Build and maintain a volunteer facilities team to assist with projects and provide coverage 7 days a week.
• Provide technical guidance and training to staff and volunteers assisting with facility maintenance tasks.
• Support PWC events and programs with setup, logistics, and tear-down as needed.

Administrative & Budget Responsibilities

• Develop and manage the annual facilities maintenance budget with the Executive Director.
• Track and report facility expenses, supplies, and contractor invoices.
• Develop documentation, guidelines, protocols and training as needed for all systems. 
• Maintain accurate records of inspections, maintenance, compliance, and safety documentation.
• Assist in developing long-term capital improvement plans and sustainability initiatives.
• Attend and participate in clinic operations meetings

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; associate’s or technical degree preferred.
• Minimum 3 years of experience in facilities, building, or maintenance management (nonprofit or animal care facility preferred).
• Working knowledge of building systems, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and general repairs.
• Strong organizational, problem-solving, and project management skills.
• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and adapt to changing priorities.
• Proficient in basic computer skills (email, spreadsheets, documentation, reporting).
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

• This is a primarily onsite position. A consistent work schedule aligned with the operational needs of the center is required.
• Work hours will be scheduled in advance and in accordance with applicable wage and hour laws.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings or weekends, to respond to facility emergencies.
• Comfortable working outdoors and in varied weather conditions.
• Ability to lift, move, or carry up to 50 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks safely.

Compensation & Benefits

• Hourly wage range $25–$30/hr DOE (Depending on Experience)

This is a full time (40 hour/week) position. This position is “at-will” meaning that the employment relationship can be terminated by either PWC or the employee for any reason, at any time, with or without prior notice, and with or without cause.
