About La Veta Trails

La Veta Trails (LVT) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing, improving, and maintaining parks and trail systems in the Spanish Peaks region of southern Colorado. Our mission is to connect people of all ages and abilities to the outdoors, inspire volunteerism, and support the health and economic vitality of our community. We steward trails in partnership with the Town of La Veta, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the U.S. Forest Service (San Carlos Ranger District), and Huerfano RE-1 School.

Position Summary

The Director of Operations and Development serves as La Veta Trails' lead staff member and is responsible for organizational management, fundraising, grant development, program oversight, volunteer engagement, and partnerships.

Working closely with the Board of Directors, the Director leads efforts to secure the financial resources necessary to sustain and grow the organization while ensuring the successful implementation of La Veta Trails' Volunteer Stewardship, Ecological Restoration, and Environmental Education.

The Director serves as the organization's primary ambassador and is responsible for building the partnerships, donor relationships, and funding opportunities that advance the mission of La Veta Trails.

Key Responsibilities

1. Fundraising and Resource Development (35–40%)

2. Organizational Operations and Administration (25%)

3. Program Leadership and Partnership Development (20%)

4. Volunteer Leadership and Community Engagement (15%)

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated success in grant writing and fundraising.
  • Experience with nonprofit organizations and leadership.
  • Experience managing donor relationships and annual giving campaigns.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience managing projects and organizational operations.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with volunteers.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with conservation, outdoor recreation, environmental education, or public lands.
  • Knowledge of foundation, government, and corporate grant programs.
  • Familiarity with rural communities and community-based nonprofit organizations.

Compensation and Benefits

  • 25–30 hours/week:
  • $28.00 to $40.00 per hour depending on experience.
  • Potential to increase hours contingent on funding.
