The Director of Projects and Training adds value to the mission of the Conservation Corps of Long Beach (CCLB) by using their skills and expertise to advance CCLB’s goals of youth development and training. Reporting to the Deputy Director/COO, the Director of Projects and Training is responsible for managing multiple teams and both developing and implementing various types of projects and trainings that could include, but are not limited to, community greening / urban forestry, zero waste, restoration, land management, and operations. The position is also responsible for project cost estimating, oversight, interfacing with project sponsors, and all project technical administration including project updates, reporting, and other grant/project management requirements.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

Training and Development:

  • Supervise, motivate, direct, mentor, and coordinate staff and crews of young people in a demanding work training/educational program.
  • Supervise, oversee, and conduct training for CCLB crews in the completion of tasks/projects.
  • Complete and oversee daily contract and grant tasks.
  • Provides leadership and works with program staff and develop and maintain a high performance, customer service-oriented work environments that supports achieving CCLB mission, objectives and service expectations; provides leadership and participates in programs and activities that promote a positive employee relations environment.
  • Serves as an expert program resource; provides training and technical assistance to program staff; interprets program policies and associated regulations; trains, advises and assists project supervisors with field program and evaluates their consistency and effectiveness in interpreting contract/grant documents and requirement for compliance by accompanying them in the field; visit job sites to personally inspect progress on each project; conducts daily safety training program.
  • Assist as needed with on-the-job teaching of skills; and foster and encourage development of good work habits, work experience and teamwork.

Grant/Project Management

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for grant or project sponsor/funder.
  • Lead planning and development / pursuit of new projects and trainings opportunities.
  • Manage the teams by providing appropriate direction and ongoing feedback, delegating tasks, prioritizing work, and conducting performance reviews.
  • Lead weekly grant/project meetings and provide updates on grant/project status, next steps, and recommendations.
  • Manage and track grant/project budget and ensure grant/project outcomes are delivered within budget.
  • Ensure compliance with all grant/project requirements, including but not limited to, documentation, reporting, and invoicing.
  • Keep the team up-to-date on grant/project progress and ensure timely communication
  • Execute project deliverables, including but not limited to vendor and partner management, overseeing CCLB work crew operations, and coordinating with all projects teams and departments to meet organization’s goals

Other Duties

  • Serves as an expert program resource; provides training and technical assistance to program staff; interprets program policies and associated regulations; trains, advises and assists project supervisors with field program and evaluates their consistency and effectiveness in interpreting plans for contract compliance by accompanying them in the field; visit job sites to personally inspect progress on each project; conducts safety training program.
  • Teach skills, foster, and encourage development of good work habits, work experience, and teamwork.
  • In coordination with Corpsmember Development Department, assist with job development, career awareness activities, and other programmatic aspects.
  • Manage fleet of vehicles and company assets.
  • Maintain necessary files and documentation for contractual requirements.
  • Represent CCLB externally in a variety of settings, including, but not limited to, conferences, public meetings, and other gatherings.
  • Adhere to all CCLB policies and procedures.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Communication Skills: Strong ability to interact with all stakeholders such as corpsmembers, project partners, training partners, funders/sponsors, government agencies, public officials, the public, etc. with diplomacy and a customer service mindset; strong writing communication skills.
  • Time/Project Management: Demonstrated strong attention to detail and accuracy, along with ability to set goals, organize, prioritize, structure tasks and deliver on outcomes.
  • Team-Oriented: Ability to thrive and work effectively as part of a team collaboratively, with limited supervision; experience fostering collaboration and managing to outcomes.
  • Initiative/Drive: Ability to take action and handle issues independently; highly dependable and demonstrates accountability.
  • Flexibility: Have an entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to navigate changing priorities and competing deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Analytical skills: Strong ability to identify, assimilate, and recommend strategies to solve complex problems and determine courses of action.
  • Software: Skills with Microsoft Office required; CRM & Excel skills highly desirable.

Experience/Education:

  • Demonstrate highly effective supervisory skills (expected to be at least 5 – 7 years’ supervisory experience leading multi-level teams); this includes assisting in hiring, training and the ability to delegate work activities to accomplish diverse Corps objectives.
  • Knowledge of recycling, natural lands management, and community greening industry and technical writing (for proposal bids and contracts).
  • Knowledge and appreciation of environmental conservation. An affinity and ability to share and instruct environmental ethics with CCLB participants and staff.
  • Proficiency in using tools and equipment appropriate for various work projects.
  • Experiencing managing projects from funding, to design, to implementation, and close-out.
  • Three years of experience in working with young adults from a diverse social and ethnic background
  • High school diploma or equivalent, required; Postsecondary degree (BA/BS), preferred
  • Prior management experience in public or non-profit agencies, preferred

Work Environment

This position operates in multiple environment settings, including but not limited to a professional office environment, outdoor work, or driving vehicles for programmatic needs. The office setting role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers and filing cabinets. The outdoor work routinely uses tools, power equipment, and mobile phones in outdoor or remote areas and will be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The driving setting role may focus on safely driving large fleet vehicles (including but not limited to, trucks, vans, and cars) from one project location to another for needs of programmatic deliverables or safely operating construction equipment.

Physical/Time Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform successfully the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision requirements of the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The position will have some weekend and evening responsibilities as needed.

Licenses and Insurability

Current valid “B - General Building Contractor” license, required; Class C California driver’s license, required; Class A or B Commercial driver’s license or Commercial Class C with passenger endorsement, preferred; Must be able to meet commercial policy insurability requirements; If a private vehicle is utilized for company purposes, proof of personal minimum liability insurance coverage per the requirements of the state of California must be provided to CCLB an maintained in force.

Supervisory Responsibility

This is an exempt position that may have supervisory responsibility over corpsmembers, supervisors, volunteers and/or other temporary staff, or a combination of these.

Compensation
