Position: District Manager

Location: Washington County Soil & Water Conservation District, Machias, Maine

Summary Description: The position of District Manager will provide technical assistance on conservation and natural resource planning and development. The person occupying this position is directly responsible to the Washington County Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors. The employee will adhere to the prescribed personnel policies.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities

  • Develop programming to promote environmental stewardship by individuals
    • Assist with technical and engineering field assistance to landowners in Washington County and units of government.
    • Develop engineering designs, provide layout, and assist with construction of conservation practices.
    • Assist customers with pollution abatement concerns.
  • Develop and contribute to conservation projects in Washington County
    • Assist in conducting tours, field days, public viewing of demonstrations including equipment, plots, practices, etc.
  • Perform administrative duties.
    • Prepare and maintain all records, reports, and forms required by the Washington County SWCD Supervisors.
    • Manage district finances
    • Operate the district website and Facebook page and build the district’s presence in Washington County through outreach efforts
  • Maintain Working Partnership with NRCS
    • Coordinate with NRCS staff through regular communication and attending relevant meetings.
    • Follow NRCS planning processes and complete documentation to identify natural resource concerns, develop conservation plans and practices, conduct surveys for NEPA compliance, and assist landowners in applying for NRCS funding.
  • Perform other duties as requested by the Washington County SWCD Supervisors.

Qualifications

  • Passion for natural resource management.
  • Background knowledge of conservation in Washington County.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with enthusiasm to learn about agriculture, conservation, land use, natural resource, or related issues facing landowners and land users in Maine.
  • Reliable transportation; possess valid Maine driver’s license with good driving record.
  • Education and/or experience in environmental science/natural resources
    • High school education/diploma/GED. 
    • Undergraduate degree (Bachelor’s or Associate’s) or professional certification(s) in agriculture, natural resources, or related field preferred.
  • Must pass pre-employment screening/background check.
  • Experienced and able at planning, organization, and program management.
  • Strong Microsoft Office Tools skills; able to understand and use applications that support technical assistance (e.g., mapping, GIS, etc.).

Hours of work: 40 hours per week at $20.00 per hour. Work is estimated to be both in office and in the field and will be determined by the season.
