This position assists the District Resource Specialist with implementation of resource management projects across State Park District 5, which includes Claytor Lake, Fairy Stone, Occoneechee, Smith Mountain Lake, Staunton River, and Staunton River Battlefield State Parks. The position will be based at Staunton River State Park in Halifax County, Virginia. Position will require daily travel and occasional overnight travel.

Primary duties will be to assist resource management staff in performing forest management activities including timber cruising, timber evaluation, boundary marking, vegetation surveys, permanent monitoring plot establishment, and long term land management planning and implementation. This position will also be responsible for supervising a crew of 4 individuals working to build new trails and repair existing trails as well as complete other natural resources related projects.

Minimum Qualifications: Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, to perform strenuous work in an outdoor forest environment. Knowledge of regional tree/non-woody plant species and ecosystems, and tree species identification strongly recommended. Knowledge and experience in use of forest measurement tools including Biltmore stick, clinometers, diameter tape and compass. Ability to operate and maintain equipment such as tractors, skid steer, chainsaw, etc, is a plus. Valid Driver’s license is required.

Preferred Qualifications: Working knowledge of GIS/GPS equipment and mapping software, ESRI ArcMap 10 or ArcPro is an advantage. Supervisory experience is an advantage. VA Pesticide Applicator's License or Registered Technician Certification License preferred. License will need to be obtained if not currently licensed. NWCG fire fighter crew level certification preferred. Certification will need to be obtained within 12 months. Preferred but not required a Bachelor's degree in natural resources or related field or relative experience.

Special Requirements: There are no health benefits or paid vacation leave associated with the job. Employees are limited to working no more than 1500 hours in 12 months from May 1 to April 30. Position does not include benefits. Employment in all positions within the Virginia State Parks is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check. Employer participates in e-Verify.
