The Door Peninsula Land Steward Intern performs and participates in preserve operations, maintenance, and management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Door Peninsula Land Steward Intern maintains preserve areas frequented by the visiting public and removes exotic species.  The Intern maintains tools and equipment and may open and close preserve(s) to the visiting public. Projects include:

  • Participating in field work to manage invasive species, apply herbicide, conduct timber management, engage volunteers, and map unique features and rare species.
  • Creating and maintaining Geographic Information Systems (GIS) records.
  • Use of mechanical and heavy equipment.
  • Monitoring lands owned in fee for issues such as trespass, boundary encroachment, and vandalism. Assist with monitoring of trail systems and signage.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • May interact with visitors.
  • Works under infrequent supervision.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations for long periods of time in isolated settings, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.  
  • This position will require attendance at an intern cohort orientation in Madison, Wisconsin on June 4, 2026.
  • May attend an overnight TNC Wisconsin All Staff retreat scheduled for June 15 – 18, 2026.            

The position is based in the Northeast Wisconsin project office in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. This is a full-time, 12-week summer internship position with an approximate start date of June 1, 2026. This position is paid $17.00 per hour. Housing is not provided, and transportation to and from the office is the responsibility of the applicant.
