ORGANIZATION AND POSITION SUMMARY

Glen Helen is an independent nonprofit nature preserve and environmental learning area located in Yellow Springs, Ohio. The mission of its Outdoor Education Center (OEC) is to provide transformative learning experiences that engage learners in the practices of sciences; promote self-discovery and growth; cultivate community; and create a connection to our natural world. The Ecocamp Coordinator is an integral member of the OEC team, supporting naturalists, campers, and our camp community throughout the summer camp season. This position is a great stepping stone for naturalists with 2-3 years of camp experiences looking to take on more responsibility in a supervisory role. Our team forms a fun, passionate, engaged learning community interested in making a difference in the lives of everyone we work with. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage Ecocamp operations through evening shifts Monday through Thursday (3:00 - 10:00 pm) with a short afternoon shift on Friday
  • Facilitate transitions between scheduled activities, distribute camper medication, and oversee meals provided to the campers
  • Be available to support all staff and prepared to troubleshoot all unexpected situations as they arise.
  • Be the primary contact for accidents and injuries with a confident understanding of the OEC emergency policies and procedures
  • Keep a general inventory of first aid supplies, craft supplies, education materials, etc.
  • Ensure that staff are properly maintaining facilities and equipment
  • Maintain a daily log for seamless communication amongst staff members
  • Assist with the care of reptiles at OEC and maintain accurate handling records
  • Fill in for sick or absent Naturalist Counselors as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2-3 years of experience working in a camp setting. In a lead or supervisory role is preferred.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to communicate clearly and diplomatically with a wide range of audiences, such as parents, children, visitors, etc. 
  • Demonstrate a respect and affinity for children, a passion for the natural environment, and a commitment to equity and inclusion
  • Proven leadership skills
  • Commitment to equity and inclusion
  • Willing to work closely as a team and act as a positive role model for seasonal staff
  • Ability to troubleshoot challenges with patience and creativity 
  • Ability to take initiative and produce results with minimal supervision
  • Proof of vaccination against COVID-19
  • Pass criminal background check and fingerprinting prior to start of employment
  • Completion of First Aid, CPR, and AED training prior to start of employment
  • Applicants must be able to commit to the full duration of the program

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS  

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in similar position
  • Valid driver’s license
  • First Aid, CPR, and AED Certification
  • Proof of vaccination against COVID-19
  • BCI/FBI background check required
