Ecological Landscape Designer 

Hill House Nursery, a premier grower of native plants for harmonious gardens, ecologically-sound landscapes and diverse conservation projects, is seeking a creative and dedicated Ecological Landscape Designer to join our team!  This position blends the science of ecology with the creativity of landscape design to develop sustainable outdoor spaces for our clients, while emphasizing the relationships between plants, animals, humans, and the environment. 

Our ideal candidate has a strong understanding of ecology, botany, and horticulture and is knowledgeable about ecological design principles, native plants, and sustainable landscape practices. This person would also have experience with CAD software, project management, and excellent communication skills. 

Responsibilities 

• Designing and planning ecologically-sound landscapes, primarily using native plants. 
• Working closely with the Hill House staff on production and plant needs for designs. 
• Create detailed plans and drawings of landscapes using CAD software as needed. 
• Meeting clients to discuss their needs, preferences, and budget. 
• Assessing the ecological impact of proposed designs. 
• Working with contractors, engineers, and other professionals to implement designs. 
• Monitoring and managing the progress of landscape projects. 
• Maintaining detailed records of design work and project progress. 
• Staying current with ecological design principles, native plants, and sustainable landscape practices. 
• Assisting other Nursery staff with plant sales both at the Nursery and at events throughout the year. 

Qualifications Experience Requirements 

• A BSc degree in Landscape Architecture, Ecology, or relevant field is desirable while proven work experience as a Landscape Designer or similar role is vital.  
• Technical experience in landscape design using CAD software (AutoCAD, SketchUp, ProLandscape, etc) to create detailed landscape plans and drawings. 
• Real-world experience in creating ecological landscapes.  
• Theoretical and practical experience in landscape design, urban planning, especially stormwater management plans, rain gardens, and bioswales. 
• Knowledge of local and regional native plants, as well as an understanding of their ecological relationships and benefits. 
• Strong communication skills to interact with both clients and contractors and other staff. 
• Excellent project management and problem-solving skills to address challenges during the design or implementation phases of a landscape project. 
• 1 to 3 years of experience in the field as Garden Design Assistant, Environmental Planner, Environmental Consultant or as a Junior Landscape Architect.

Additional Information 

• Job Title: Ecological Landscape Designer 
• Work Environment: Mixture of field and office work with site visits as needed. Some travel is required for client consultations and project implementation. 
• Reporting Structure: Reports to, and collaborates with, the Nursery General Operations Manager. 
• Salary: Salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications.   
• Pay Range: $48,000 to $62,000 
• Location: Woodville, VA in rural, bucolic and artsy Rappahannock County, VA., 1.5 hours west of Washington, DC and 10 minutes from Shenandoah National Park 
• Employment Type: Full-time, 40 hours/week, Monday thru Friday, with additional weekend hours required for seasonal plant sale events
