Wolf Water Resources, Inc. (W2r) is seeking an ecologist and project manager to join our team in Portland, Oregon as a full-time employee. As a multi-disciplinary firm, our ecologists work closely with engineers, geomorphologists, and hydrologists to deliver habitat restoration and essential infrastructure projects.

Our work takes place at the intersection of built and natural environments. Ecologists on our team contribute to resource surveys, wetland delineations, functional assessments, habitat analyses, and permitting efforts. A few examples of project types include floodplain connectivity and stream corridor resiliency for aquatic species ecosystem enhancement, innovative stormwater/sewer retrofits/construction, critical bridge replacement, levee modification, and dam removal. Work takes place both in the office and in the field during all seasons. 

We work primarily in the Pacific Northwest for government agencies, utilities, tribal organizations, levee/drainage districts, watershed and fisheries enhancement groups, transportation agencies, consultant firms, and other entities. 

The ideal candidate will possess multiple years of experience conducting natural resource assessments, coordinating aquatic resource permitting, and leading projects in Oregon and Washington. They will possess project leadership experience and will be motivated and easily interface with our clients and other project consultants. Detail on the duties, responsibilities, and qualifications for this position are below.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Fulfil project manager or coordinator role for projects of varying complexity: allocate staff and resources to project tasks; provide task management of project team members; track/manage project budgets; communicate responsively to clients and project subconsultants. 
  • Serve as the environmental permitting specialist for projects of varying complexity: coordinate and develop relationships with regulatory staff; collaborate with team members (internally and with subconsultant partners) of various technical disciplines; help clients navigate applicable environmental laws to ensure project compliance. 
  • Conduct natural resource assessments potentially including wetland delineations, functional assessments, vegetation inventories, and fish/wildlife surveys. 
  • Lead technical aspects of proposals; thoughtfully generate project schedules, budgets, and scopes of work for environmental tasks. 
  • Proactively seek opportunities for continuing education and present project work at industry events.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience working in the natural resources field, preferably in environmental consulting.
  • Possess technical knowledge of biological systems and ecosystem processes, with an emphasis on Pacific Northwest ecoregions.
  • Project coordination and environmental permitting experience.
  • Excellent technical writing and presentation skills. Writing samples may be requested.
  • Ability to convey technical information to clients and project partners and in a way that is collaborative and easy to understand.
  • Commitment to accuracy and thoroughness. Apply company protocols and tools for quality assurance and quality control of work processes and products. Foster quality focus in others; improve processes, products, and services.
  • Comfort using GPS, maps, and field data collection equipment to perform fieldwork.
  • Valid driver's license, including a good driving record and ability to meet company insurance requirements.
  • BA/BS in an applicable field (i.e., environmental science/policy, natural resource planning, biology, or closely related discipline). 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Project management experience. 
  • Experience preparing scopes of work and fees.
  • Experience interpreting engineering plansets and analyses.
  • Experience preparing applications and securing permits for water resource projects. Experience navigating environmental laws such as CWA, NEPA ESA, Oregon Removal-Fill Law, Washington Shorelines/SEPA, and local/regional land use regulations. 
  • Knowledge of wetland and riparian plant species identification, wetland soils, and wetland hydrology indicators. 
  • Experience leading wildlife and avian surveys.  
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS software and spatial analysis.

  • It is expected that W2r staff perform field work (e.g., during early project stages through the construction phase). The candidate should be comfortable outdoors and able to hike and carry equipment in a variety of weather and terrain conditions (e.g., densely vegetated, wet and/or humid conditions, snow or ice conditions, uneven ground, hillslope environments, and extreme cold or heat). 
  • The employee must be able to lift 50 pounds. 
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. 
  • Travel to project sites in various regions of Oregon and Washington will be expected.
