Job Description

Are you passionate about Barton Springs and protecting the environment of Austin, Texas? Want to work for an outstanding environmental nonprofit that has protected Barton Springs, the Edwards Aquifer and Barton Creek Watershed for over 30 years? If the answer is yes, we encourage you to join Save Our Springs Alliance in our quest to protect our home lands, waters, and wildlife from pollution and over-development.

Possibly the funnest job in Austin? Help support ecotours and snorkel tours at Barton Springs Pool! We are looking for fellow Barton Springs swimmers who are comfortable with public speaking and facilitating group activities. We will provide paid training and CPR cert, if needed. $20-$25/hour, 8am-12pm Saturday mornings. 5-10 hours a week. Help during July/August is needed the most, but tours start in March with an opportunity to start earning early! 

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with outreach coordinator on prep and planning for Barton Springs Pool (BSP) snorkel tours. Assist with tour itinerary design based on participant needs, weather conditions, and other factors.
  • Productively and positively engage tour participants around current and immediate conservation issues related to BSP, deliver tour curriculum in an effective and engaging manner (storytelling rather than lecture), answer questions from guests throughout the tour.
  • Build rapport with guests, creating a positive group dynamic, and adapting to diverse personalities. 
  • Understand and respect different cultures and customs when interacting with international visitors
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of the local area and insider information about BSP (we will train you!)
  • Provide exceptional customer service by addressing concerns, adapting to unexpected situations, and ensuring guest satisfaction. 
  • Assist interested persons in becoming more involved with SOS through membership activation, petition signing, communicating with elected officials, attending city council meetings and/or volunteering at future events.
  • Provide information about SOS Alliance and local environmental issues to the public and educate fellow Austinites about ways to support SOS Alliance.
  • Help maintain outdoor and water safety standards for all participants.

Desired Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills. Outgoing, comfortable with public speaking and engaging with others in respectful, thoughtful conversation.
  • Very comfortable being in Barton Springs pool for extended periods of time. Positive attitude and enjoys being outdoors.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people from different walks of life.
  • Advanced listening skills;  avoids lecturing others or going on long tangents.
  • Reliable means of transportation to outreach sites in south Austin.
  • Ability to read and comprehend press releases, news articles and other training materials around conservation issues in Austin, Texas.
  • Background in activism, civic engagement, environmental or sustainability studies is a plus but not required.
  • Spanish fluency is a plus but not required.
