The Resource Conservation District (RCD) of Greater San Diego County connects people to resources that strengthen the land, wildlife, and communities. We work across the majority of San Diego County on a variety of program areas, including wildfire resilience, climate-smart agriculture, education, pollinator habitat, and community garden management.

The Education and Outreach Coordinator supports the RCD’s mission by connecting the community to conservation through engaging educational programs, volunteer events, and strategic communications. This role bridges environmental education and public engagement, creating opportunities for residents to learn about and participate in natural resource conservation efforts while showcasing the RCD’s impact through storytelling and outreach.

Key Responsibilities:

Environmental Education (approx. 40 %)

  • Delivering in-person Watershed Education presentations at participating schools.
  • Assisting with program evaluation.
  • Reviewing and updating program materials to fully meet grade-level NGSS standards and to align with STEM objectives.
  • Assisting with program administration, including booking presentations, program promotion, and emailing packets for participating teachers.
  • Working with RCD staff to identify additional resources to support the program.

Outreach and Engagement (approx. 60 %)

  • Collaborate with department managers to develop and implement outreach strategies that highlight RCD programs, conservation successes, and community impact.
  • Create and manage written and visual content for newsletters, website, social media, press releases, annual reports, and promotional materials.
  • Maintain and regularly update website content to reflect ongoing programs and events.
  • Coordinate and promote volunteer opportunities and community events, ensuring consistent messaging and participant engagement.
  • Capture and organize photos, videos, and stories to support RCD communications and fundraising efforts.
  • Support cross-departmental communication to ensure alignment between education, restoration, and outreach initiatives.

Position requirements:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to translate complex environmental topics for public audiences.
  • Experience in education (K-12), community engagement, or communications, ideally pertaining to environmental issues.
  • Proficiency in social media management, digital content creation, and basic graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite).
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Passion for conservation, environmental stewardship, and community involvement.
  • Possess a current, valid California driver's license
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Punctual, reliable and professional
  • Creative, sense of humor, “can do” spirit, flexible, passion for learning
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus but not required.

This position is offered at 32 hours per week and is eligible for benefits (prorated when less than 40 hours per week).

Schedule and location: Working hours are generally flexible within normal business hours (between 8AM – 5PM). Presentations and events may occur outside of normal working hours throughout San Diego County. Work is partially remote, in the RCD’s Lakeside office at least two days per week. RCD vehicles are available for work-related travel.
